Wulfhere: King of Mercia

Wulfhere: King of Mercia

Wulfhere: King of Mercia ohevshalomel: Very cool. We tend to think of people living 1, 000 or more years ago as just names on paper, kind of two-dimensional actors in a puppet theatre of history. It's good to have these people fleshed out, though, and to remember that to the people living in this area of the world back then, this was life-or-death. These wars no doubt took enormous physical, economic, and psychological tolls on king and peasant alike, even for as tough as everyday life forced these people to be.

If you ever remake this or revisit the period you'd do well to look again at Bretwalda. The idea that it translates to Briton Ruler is highway controversial, and the Bret is not commonly accepted by historians as having anything to with the Britons in either reference or origin. It is believed to be etymologically related to terms for warlords, especially overlords or high kings, and was used as a direct translation of the Latin Imperium including in meaning and concept

There is a legend that my town, Stone in Staffordshire, was founded due to the cairn of stones raised over the graves of two Mercian princes killed by their father Wulfhere for converting to Christianity, and that Wulfhere was later converted to Christianity by his wife and did penance. Probably a bit of monastic propaganda to establish the town and bring in pilgrims, but an interesting story

All the stories have been told
Of kings and days of old,
But there's no england now.
All the wars that were won and lost
Somehow don't seem to matter very much anymore.
All the lies we were told,
All the lies of the people running round,
They're castles have burned.
Now i see change,
But inside we're the same as we ever were.

Hadn't realised Mercia stretched as far north as Hatfield and Hatfield Chase. Tho there are myths of Edwin losing and being buried in Hatfield (as well as near Edwinstowe. But means I was born and have lived my life within Mercia. Post Brexit that might be worth promoting beyond being simply a region: -).

This time period is so rich with history. I love the art work on the helmets and armour of the saxons. Makes me wonder what they would have looked like in medievil times had they defeated William at Hastings and safeguarded their Saxon kingdom.

Aescwine. Is not pronounced escwine it is pronounced Ashwin ( ash as in tree) SC in Anglo Saxon as in shown, short, Shadow etc ( SC in Anglo Saxon = sh sound in modern English ) then there's the different dialects

Illustrations of actual period armor (keep the maps) are better than shitty kitsch clipart. Lose the bad cartoons and show period objects and pics of relevant locations instead.

Hmm German invaders, warrior class with armies levied from local celts?
Mercia cant be a Germanic name it comes from murcia Spain original people of the Midlands.

I wonder how the original Anglo Saxons pronounced Mercia and Bernicia? Fairly sure their language used a hard C not the soft C from the French.
reply

Absolutely superb. This Mercian thanks you very much for putting this most informative video together. Bring back Tamworth as the Capital!
reply

To think, without all this nonsense about who's religion is better, none of us whites would have slaughtered so much of each other.

Why did Northumbria lose supremacy, and then why did Mercia lose it eventually as well? Also, is Northumbria different from York?
reply

Not to be confused with Orange Julius Caesar, founding member of the Order of the Bone Spur, who would be king of Merica.
reply

Excellent video, well described, love Merican history. SO fascinating. Fellow Merican, bring Tamworth back as a capital.
reply

Is it pronounced 'Wulf-hear' or 'Wulf-heh-ra'? I've heard both. I never know how to pronounce Anglo-Saxon names.
