I have been a student of history for over 50 years. This is the best overview of Napoleon's Marshall's I have ever viewed. I have studied Napoleon and his armies so much that I had to obtain a real Cuirassier 19th Century sword, marked 1813. The sword is huge, even compared to an American 1840 wrist breaker cavalry sabre. I also ride horses a great deal. I cannot imagine the fear 1. 000 heavy cavalry would create when coming at you at a full gallop, boot to boot. Those men, on both sides, were brave in the extreme.

Davout was right about Borodino though. The head on onslaught was a mistake. Kind of like Gettysburg with Pickets charge right at a well defended position. He sounds like more of a Stonewall Jackson type brave and disciplined but not well liked. The Hamburg decision is also very interesting if he had been in those battles to the south. Maybe he was an ass and not a people person but he could have made a difference in some of those battles for sure.

Napoleon's enemies may have defeated him eventually, but no one can delete the legendary status of this man, his marshalls and his grand armee. They are outshining everyone of the same period by far. And I think that's something Napoleon would want better than simply being one of many emperors. God, what would I give to be able to speak to this man.

I'm looking for anyone interested in the Napleonic wars and writing. I want to submit a script for a series about Napoleon and his top marshals. Since rumors of Ney escaping to the US and a Peter Ney buried in North Carolina with his headstone saying, Served as a soldier in the French Revolution under Napleon Bonaparte.

America could learn a thing or two about recognizing and promoting the most competent military leaders. We might have done better in recent adventures in the Middle East and evacuation from Afghanistan. If you tolerate incompetents and political hacks you get the results we have just witnessed.

There is one thing I think deserves a particular praise, the narrator makes very successful efforts to pronounce the french names with great accuracy. It's very pleasant to hear someone genuinely trying to pronounce everything the way it should be. Thank you.

i think in a certain time Napoleon would have realised of how good Davout was and felt threatened by his skills and kind of isolated him. also if he was not so likeable other would have contributed to that. hey that how the world works even nowdays. .

One of the greater tributes to Lannes actually came from the Army. When Napoleon made Macdonald, Oudinot, and Marmont were made marshals after Wagram, the army grumbled that l'Empereur was trying to get the equivalent of Lannes in small change.

berthier being an officer at 17 and accompanying one of the most famous French Generals to America to witness and partake in the major defeat of Britain to America and then going on to be one of the best Marechals under Napoleon is a badass life.

Davout force marched his troops 70 miles in two days
You can't just speak that and move on without comment. I can't begin to describe what an achievement that is on it's own, let alone to be effective in any way upon arrival.

I appreciated your series on Napoleon's marshalls! As a Napoleon buff, I found it quite informative! I should add that under Napoleon's Imperial court, Marshall Berthier served as Master of the Hunt--an appropriate position for him!

Maybe Marshall Davout in Napoleon's eyes is the best for independent command therefore in his mind no other marshall could secure his northern flank in hamburg than Davout, so he could put all his focus on his main campaign?

Personal opinion
Marshal suchet commanding Napoleon left wing instead of Ney and Marshal Davout commanding right instead of grouchy at Waterloo who knows what level of change it had made in the future

Nietzsches idea that Napoleon had reignited the flame of antiquity is so incredibly true, especially after you read about Marshall Lannes. He was something akin to a hero from antiquity.

You add up all the slaughter, gore, broken bodies and at the end of this genocidal stinking dwarf accomplished nothing. A guy who invented and perfected shoelaces benefited more mankind.

Berthier truly was a master of diplomacy. He convinced his wife and mistress to live together in the same house, truly a legend!
