Belisarius: The Last Battle (6/6) Kenrick: It is a sad fact of history, that even those well educated who should be aware of it, will quite blindly repeat it. Justinian should have either pulled out of Italy or backed Belisarius to the hilt for the second campaign. Half measures were never going to cut it and allowing these other generals to, again, undermine the man led to so much suffering and failure.
No doubt it was difficult to put trust in anyone at that level of power and government, especially a roman one that had made almost a sport of assassinating it's emperors both good and bad but to keep jerking support out from one of, if not your greatest, general was short sighted as all get out and as a emperor holding title to the roman values and knowledge of old is simple inexcusable.

One of the best Epic History series. It literally kept me on the edge of my seat. I love history and have, embarrassingly, never heard of the great conquests and loyalty of a single man. I loved the Napoleon series as well as the World Wars but this one, in presentation alone, made me feel as if I was watching a movie. Thanks to this, I will do more research on this great general and the time surrounding it. Please, I implore you all, keep up the great work and allow us to have more great content. Your hard work has been shown with this as well as the others. You have my loyalty, as Justinian had Belasarius. Without the killing of course. lol

it looks like it's always much better option to take arm and overthrow the emperor if you have a military strength
now i kind of understand why roman generals who won the great victory and earn the military support always try to overthrow their emperor
it's a better choice than being royal to such a fragile and fearful emperor who has no confidence in himself
after all there are many individuals who are being named as good or great leader but not really in actual case
maybe others were so much worse that if you didn't go straight insane like nero or caligula you get the great ot good title before your name

I am from Capua today a small town yesterday a Roman possession with the Roman amphitheater born before the Colosseum. there have been people like Spartacus and Hannibal. the battle of Belisarius the The birth of Ettore Fieramosca who stopped the French on behalf of the Kingdom of Naples in Taranto. In Capua there was the last real battle between Garibaldi's red coats and the soldiers of the Kingdom of Naples, before the unification of Italy. In short, how much history in a small town 30km from Naples

From what I know It wasn't the Roman way to have great generals roam poor in the streets! Even captured enemy generals would be sent to live peacefully in villas. The Romans valued great leaders and would try to keep brain in Rome. So I don't believe the medieval story about Belisarius being blinded and left in the streets. PS: I have watched these videos about Belisarius many times, I don't even remember how many and I will probably watch them again! The way these videos are done is inspiring!

My viking blood boils every time I watch one of these series. There is something about war that men find alluring. The thought of conquering ones enemies in battle is a very seductive thought that only a man has, his unique warrior and survival instinct are at their highest level in war, also with the brotherhood formed with his fellow soldiers makes going to war an addiction because there is no better feeling a man can experience.

Justinian was a throughly rancid person of no worth. I wonder if his death was inglorious and fitting of a putrid person.
Of course, the true untold history was stored in Satans vault at the Vatican. Satan cant have his favorite idiots look bad. Now satan doesnt care if people know that he controls Rome bc Rome controls 1. 4 billion lemmings.

For me it's mind-baffling that the Byzantine Emperor would still allow other Generals to interfere with Belisarius' command at that point. You would think that they'd implement a plan where it doesn't happen that every commander can just ignore orders on a whim without having to fear great punishment.

I'm not a Muslim but I have to admit that the ability of the Arab Muslim armies in sweeping Byzantium and Sasanid from just a small tribe and the tendency to inferiority in numbers and military technology compared to the two kingdoms is a proof of the mental toughness of Arab Muslim troops at that time

What an exhilataring finale. I could barely contain my emotions seeing the old Belisarius, going into battle one last time to save the empire, surrounded by just a rag tag band of civilians and a few hundred aging veterans.
You have, once more, showed mastery in your craft. Bravo.

Conquering North Africa was a good move. A lucrative province brought back into the fold, without much effort. Unfortunately Italy was a fruitless vanity project and a drain on the Empire, which surely did more harm than North Africa could make up for.

Your presentation is impeccable, and your voice is like strong honey to the ear. I would love it if one of your next projects would be about the Wars of the Diadochi, from the division at Babylon to the Celtic invasion of Greece. Cheers!

Ave Belisarius, laudable Roman general, Victor against the odds! You were so loyal to a great Emperor whose worst flaw was to be blinded by envious cortesans and noblemen, turning ungrateful and forgetting towards you.

This is my favorite history series I've ever seen, you have really done justice to a man who otherwise doesn't get his fair dues in history. What incredible achievements he had, thank you for these fantastic videos.

Fantastic series on a general I knew basically nothing about. Astounding that most of the obstacles he had to overcome were not from the enemy but rather the envy and selfish ambition of his peers.

I will always believe that belisarius and iustinian are the reincarnation of augustus and m. agrippa and the things that happen between them are because of the other envious nobles around them
reply

If belisarius got the troops he needed, he could of conquered much of the fallen western empire. The plague ravaged the empires population and army. Constant wars also depleted the troops
reply

So basically Belisarius is actually the first person during the early middle ages that defined the existence of crimes against humanity and fought to deter them.
reply

Belisarius took so many territories with all the odds againts him, being destiny less cruel on him all europe would fall for his army and talents waging wars
reply

after viewing all 6 episodes it's safe to say belisarius is much more useful for romans as a leader. that's the reason why justinian feared him
