1848: Europe's Year of Revolutions

video description

Rating: 4.5; Vote: 2
This video tells the story of the European revolutions of 1848, one of the most dramatic and significant moments in the history of the continent. Hungry workers and peasants joined forces with liberals and nationalists, and in a series of tumultuous events, toppled the French monarchy, and forced reforms across Italy, Germany, and the Austrian Empire. But the revolutionaries were divided between middle class liberals seeking limited reforms, and radicals and workers who wanted sweeping change. As they argued over political and economic reform, counter-revolutionary forces recovered their confidence, and gathered their strength for a brutal onslaught against Europe's revolutionaries

The scary thing is that many of the same sort of conditions are now building in Europe in 2022.
Callous, incompetent governments pursuing policies designed to make people poorer and reduce their standards of living. The potential for hunger to run through the continent (although nowhere near as bad as 1848 in absolute terms, in relative terms it is likely to be a massive shock.
Are we at the point where violence will break out? Not yet, but during this winter we may reach that point.

Looked promising until they got several flags wrong on the map. Makes me question (whether justifiably or not) the rest of the content. The Habsburg Empire did not use a German flag. The Czechs have never used a Polish flag. Such silly oversights compromise any legitimate commentary please get basic facts right next time. Thank you. Shame.

First, let me thank you for lending your excellent quality and legendary thoroughness to this extremely important topic. I myself did not learn about the 1848 revolutions until well after college.
With that being said, Belisarius 4 Lyfe.

Rising prices, stagnant incomes, elite corruption, a political system incapable of change, new systems of exchanging ideas, social turmoil, widespread disillusion. what year are we talking about again?

Ireland fought against British rule in one form of rebellion or another from 1534 until its eventual independence in 1922. Watching this, it seems like Ireland and Britain are the same country.

Amazing that the people back then had such bravery and commitment to liberty and freedom. Now they dont do shit but do pointless peaceful protests isntead of taking actual action.

Seeing as how we have been facing many of the problems of post-napoleonic europe nowadays. I wouldn't be surprised if there are similar revolutions to 1848 within the next decade

Love the overall concept and great history explained in easy to understand moveds but: please replace the german flag in Vienna? Please fix it. Not just wrong but confusing.

Too bad Ireland was entirely missing and the Schleswig-Holstein conflict, the longest of the 1848 uprisings, was ignored after a brief, promising word at the start.

I'm so relieved that this rare quality content is still produced on this platform.
Please keep up and congratulations on your work. Splendid job!

it always seems interesting that a big rambunctious mod causing state troops to fire seems to be an initiating event for a lot of revolutions.

Of course the video is great despite this flaggie thing.

reply

Fun fact. Spain revolution FROM 1821 was considered more dangerous by all European monarchies than the french revolution.

This video is just as relevant today, for the decade we are moving into, as it was in 1848. Watch and learn, Padawans.
