Talking about women's few rights suggests they were oppressed (in many ways they were, no doubt) but, looked at another way, they were in a system that protected them and their children from mortal danger at a substantial cost to the men (imagine being on the hook financially for someone for life for having proposed marriage. Women voting in government affairs also must have seemed absurd. government is what calls together armies, and to allow women to alter its priorities, women who do not have to take up farm implements and go hack each other to death in an open field, would have been an outrage to the men who did.

What are the causes? knowing the practice was more common among the most deprived, it appears to me that it was a way to give families better survival chances, moving women and children from a starving house to a more well-off one. Survival instinct makes us do things that seem very strange otherwise. Even in today's world we have parents selling their babies for adoption. Motherhood is the strongest relationship in human society but is still being overcome by survival needs, and sometimes to just maintain one's lifestyle.

Wife selling may have been a blessing. As reported elsewhere by the author, it was not easy, or even impossible for women to support themselves, and it was a rough life for most, generally. Consequently, through accident or infirmity, the husband may have become unable to support his family. Selling them may have been honorable and a blessing to the wife and children, for now they could be supported and maintain their dignity.

Well. India is still a nation much humiliated by Britishers & Europeans as uncultured & uncivilized. But the fact is that the actual Indian culture & ancient Hindustani / Sanatani civilization greatly respected & acknowledged women for their greatness & capabilities. They were given equal status of men and was even worshipped as Shakthi - the Supreme Power.

In many cases, as stated, wife selling was just a way of divorcing. In some cases, the new husband was agreed in advance and no one else was allowed to bid. This transferred responsibility for the womans wellbeing legally to the new husband. It was not slavery, as the sold wife still had all the same (limited) rights as she had under her old husband.

Can't believe such sections in society originated for so many years.
Similarly the dravidian and Aryan invasion theory was brought into India when the British came here, with the intention of dividing India on basis of caste and creed. And with the intention of proselytization.

Why do people generalise, the class system in England severely divided the people, the lower classes had customs that went back over 2 thousand years. It was common to sell a wife on Market Overt days, the halter was nearly always used, a hangover from the Danes, it was usually agreed by the Wife.
