D-Day: Allies Capture Saint L- - Biggest Battles of WWII - History Erman: Oh my! My father, Robert Croney, was in the 29th Division, 116th Infantry, and he fought with these men all the way across that land to the Sieg Fried Line. He fought through this city of St. Lo. I have a plaque with several cities on it where dad had been. He spoke many times of the hedge rows and the death found there. He was an old man of 27 when drafted, could not read or write, but knew how to survive. The hills of Missouri had taught him some of that. Dad died at 69. Too young. He never forgot, and neither can I. Lord, help us remember.

My dad was in the group that push forward too far at Martinville Ridge. He said our artillery laid down a barrage around them all night long to keep the Germans from over running their position. He was a tanker and lost his leg from a German 88 when they turned out on a road, just after that. That was the 3rd tank he lost. He said the first thing they did with a new tank was break the governor, then it would go 55 mph: ) He was 17 years old, Omoha Beach first wave.

Blessed be the Fallen for their time on Watch is done. We the next generation will take up their Posts as they finally find peace and rest. I, Clayton Edger Earl Duke Jr, swore an Oath to defend my homeland. Im an American Soldier and I'll always be on Watch till my time to find peace has come.

I will never forget their sacrifice and the bravery these men showed in order to carry out their mission. The free world owe the allied forces who fought on D-Day and beyond a debt of gratitude that can't be paid with money. Our undying love and respect for these men is the least we can do.

To bad these guys fought like they did to only see this country become the laughing stock of the world. we're so weak now with all the bs -movements-. mass shootings. narcissistic -content creators-. blah blah blah. they truly were the BEST GENERATION EVER

No mention is made of the real reason that made the breakout at Saint Lo possible: An air raid of 2500 B17s on July 25th. St. Lo was cleared out on July 27, making it D+53 (not D+43. The original plan was to capture St. Lo on D+5.

Im disappointed that the entire route to Germany and all points to be captured were not planned the entire way with the Allies being AWARE of the hedgerows, mountains, swamp/bogs/potential flooding fields, rivers, towns, etc etc

My dad was a forward observer in 29 th ID, survived D-day, but was wounded outside St. Lo 11 days later. The only thing my father ever said, was that hedgerow fighting was the worse thing he-d ever experienced.

My dad came ashore second wave on Sword beach, gunner on a Petard tank. Never really spoke about his experiences, but he convinced me not to go into tanks. When it was my time, I joined the Royal Artillery

Biggest battle. According to what criteria? One could easily argue that the Battle of Stalingrad was way bigger, with more casualties and implications in the aftermath. Or Kursk. Even Berlin.

My grandfather was wound in Saint Lo in the hedge row fighting. He was bomd by own aircraft and hit in head with shrapnel. Maven Ervin Skelton 30 inf old hickory division.

For those who argue that the private sector creates the best inventions, have a look at the pure genius that the public sector creates during wartime. Unreal.

Great documentary. - I just love how they only show WHITE SOLDIERS-. No blacks, no latinos, no Asians just white faces.
Give me a F. ing break.

reply

2: 27 - -nobody was prepared for the hedgerows-. A reoccurring consequence of inept American intelligence. The American soldiers deserve better.
reply

How in the world do you do a documentary on St. Lo, and make no mention of Maj. Thomas Howie, The Citadel Class of 1929, -The Major of Saint Lo-.
reply

About 50, 000 French civilians died from allied bombings. The German propaganda made a big fuss about it, so everybody in France knew about it.
reply

Before they advanced through the hedgerows they should have fired a mortar barrage infront of the German defenses using smoke rounds.

Never forget all the heroes that freed Europe and the rest fo the world from Nazism and Japanese terror. Total respect to all.
