Sohla Makes the Oldest Recipe in the World. maybe) - Ancient Recipes With Sohla
video description
You can remove the stingers from nettles with fire. My great grandma used to do it sometimes, I think she used them to make greens but I can't be sure.
For any natural casing, it helps to soak it in water for a bit, then to really open it up and also rinse any possible leftover yuck out you can run water through it. Back then they would likely have likely done this part either in the river or a waterfall, but for indoors the tap works just fine lol. It will make stuffing things so much easier for you!
And just a random fun fact for anyone who bothered to read this whole comment: if you're ever constipated, go out and find yourself a dandelion plant and grab a couple leaves and eat them. It will get things moving much better in a couple hours. You can also drink dandelion root tea, but personally I think the leaves taste much better

my grandma made a stew older than this one. she was 104yo when she died and she was super annoying. she made the stew on tuesdays and called it -stewsday. - that probably annoyed me the most about her. that and her racism towards guatemalans. but in a twist of karma, she was the victim of a hit and run and the driver was born in guatemala. how do you like them apples, grandma shirley? racism is never right!

A very real possibility would be using a wild boar stomach. Pennsylvania German cooking includes -hogmaw- which is sausage meat and diced potatoes cooked inside a pig's stomach hence hog (pig) maw (stomach. The stomach is naturally elastic unlike the lowest part of the large intestine, as is the small intestine which is traditional casing for sausage.

Hey Sohla darling if they didn't have knives how did they get the meat off of the animal did they just smash it off? The lithic technology they had at that time rivals anything modern made, there are surgeons that will only use obsidian scalpels because it is the sharpest substance on earth! Maybe rethink the whole knife thing

In the UK (which includes but is not limited to England) mincemeat pie is mincemeat pie. mincemeat pudding is a different recipe altogether. The fact you are lumping them together is very distressing, it suggests you dont know as much as you are pretending to about the subjects you are trying to discuss.

Food safe eh? You used a wooden cutting board to cut raw meat and then put multiple things on top of it. Even if washed wooden cutting boards are not food safe and hold tons of bacteria. I went green in the gills when you then ATE off another one, lord i hope no meat was cut on that one.

-This recipe is really just a boiled ball of weeds. -
It's the day after Christmas. Daughter and I are having a beer on the couch, binging Sohla. When she made that -boiled weeds- comment I completely lost it and spit out my beer.

It's best to soak the casing in water for at least 30 minutes prior. It's easier to manipulate and stretch. I spent years hand casing sausages. Also keeping your casing moist when needed but adding water.

Its refreshing to see a cooking show where the cook isnt dramatic, out of breath, and overly hyper.
And i cant tell you how many times I have wondered about historical ingredients.

You need to invest in a Kitchen-Aide stand mixer and all of the attachments, including the sausage maker and and food processor stuff. So much more fun and time less time consuming. -

When dealing with intestines, you wanna scrub it with salt for a good half hour and then rinse it. Repeat the process a few more times. This gets rid of the smelly odour.

catfood is a modern invention. it's so weird how we've since decided that anything that smells like catfood is bad, when for thousands of years it was not a problem

They would have had access to stone knives to cut with- but could also have torn the greens. Using a knife is perfectly accurate in this case.

For the stinging nettles - if you put them in a sack of some sort, and beat them for a bit off the ground, all the stingers will come off.
