Battle Of The Cora Sea: U. S. Evades Japanese Attacks - Biggest Battles of WWII Rich: Vetjasa and these dive bomber pilots became legends. I-ve always felt a higher hand guided them. Lieutenant Commander Waldron, even disobeyed orders once airborne with his squadron and led his squadron on a course of 240 degrees where he found the Japanese fleet. Before taking to the air he told his pilots even if they found themselves the last pilot, make the hit no matter what. Waldron died in the battle and was awarded the Navy Cross. Looked at through my eyes this Midway Battle of several days was being guided by higher hands.

Mid 1943 markings on SBD-5s. SBD-3s fought at Coral Sea with big white stars on a big blue disc and a red circle in the middle. Also. Red and White stripes on rudders. Zeroes are from the carrier Shokaku. One white band on fuselage. Rudder markings EI-121. EI-= E 5th letter. 1= 1st carrier in 5th carrier division. 100 digit numbers for fighter squadrons.

The shooting range of 20 mm cannon was short & on the other hand 7. 7 mm bullets were not powerful to be aerial use. Therefore, machine guns onboard fighter Zero were designed in wrong ways that they departed from practical use. Unless the capabilities of Zero's pilots were high, their chance to win were determined to be smaller.

One thing that doesn't aligns with Swede's story is reported statistics of aircraft losses on both sides during the battle of Coral sea. That day didn't really see much in losses of Japanese fighter aircraft and pilots.
I mean, Swede did fight them off successfully, but it's dubious that he shot 3 of them down.

Wish there could've been an animated documentary about sea battles. Like how this one with air battles and Greatest Tank Battles were made. From the battle of Manila Bay to an hypothetical fituristic sea battle with modern adavanced warships like U. S. S. Zumwalt and underwater aircraft carriers.

For the record, the Battle of Coral Sea was fought to blunt the threat of a Japanese invasion of Australia where General Douglas MacArthur was -holed up-. -
His ostensible capture by the Japanese after escaping the Philippians, was a real worry for the Australians then.

this wasn't swede's only great dogfight. during the battle of the santa cruz islands 5 months later, flying an f4f wildcat with vf-10 off the uss enterprise, he shot down 7 japanese bombers while defending her, the first us pilot to do so.

It would be very easy for the Japanese pilots to feel over confident due to their planes being superior fighters. It's kinda like winning a chess match but waiting too long to put the oppent In check mate.

Great pilot at the stick of a great aircraft. The SBD was designed by Ed Heinemann who went on to design many other aircraft, in including the A-4 Skyhawk. Some folks call it the -Scooter. -

Douglas aircraft were made very rugged back then and Lt. Vejtasa took full advantage of his SBD's design to withstand a high-G force against the airframe, even with some battle damage.

I love the cgi video just adds whatever the pilot is talking about. -And it was smoking- -adds smoking animation- no disrespect I just thought the idea was funny

Really sucks our government and the people don't push for better benefits and more help towards our veterans. The term homeless veteran shouldn't even exist.

Loved the series-
But
Why couldn-t they get the markings right in the airplanes
The sbd is that of a late 43 version
Sigh-
Still fun To watch

It's disgraceful, disgusting and totally disrespectful when these so-called -history experts- can't even spell 'Coral Sea' correctly. -----

President George HW Bush flew something like 50 missions over the Sea of Japan. He was our last action hero to be elected president.

Kind of sad when they can-t even spell the location of the battle correctly in the thumbnail. Makes you wonder what else they got wrong.

An exceptional pilot really, knocking down three zeros whilst piloting a slower Dauntless dive bomber is a nearly incredible feat.

thank you Swede, for protecting our nation. for, if it wasnt for you, we may not be here now. (28 year US Army vet.

Gallant samurai defeated despite stacked odds in their favor. Seems to be a repeating pattern in the Pacific

The battle that cemented AUS/US ties forever. No amount of Red Chinese bribes will change our stance with the USA.
