Why are suntans widely seen as attractive? For much of European history, pale and untanned skin was the ideal. What caused this shift in the West? In this episode of History Dose, we investigate how beauty standards regarding tan skin changed. Moving from ancient times to present, we show you how the Industrial Revolution, CoCo Chanel, and sunscreen companies influenced the way we think about tanning today

Here's an alternative theory or two (not saying I truly believe this, but it's just as sensible as the other things proposed here): tans don't make dark-haired and dark-eyed people look better, but they do make fair hair look fairer and pale eyes paler. Because these colors of hair and eye are most common in the Caucasian nations, that's why tans have become popular only in such nations.
Now about the whole why did it take until the 20th century for tans to become popular in these nations, one just has to look at the painting of the woman and the boy. Back in the day, nobody saw your skin (or hair) because fashion up until only about 100 years ago required covering up for reasons of modesty, including your head for both men and women. Ever seen those pictures from California beaches 100 years ago where everyone was covered from head to toe? Relaxed modesty requirements allowed Caucasian people to just start NOTICING skin color and coming up with a preference for tans. So then why haven't East Asian people had the same conclusion? Back to point one about hair and eyes.
Final thought: until it became impolite to say so, Caucasians and East Asians traditionally viewed the darker-skinned races as primitive, low-IQ people, and wanted to avoid that association.

Unfortunately in the Philippines us Pinays and Pinoys have naturally darker skin. However, whiter complexion are most sought after. I have darker skin so I always feel inferior. Pale skin color is most revered and it meant Weathly/rich people. Its why skin whitening is everywhere in my country, sunscreen, umbrella, and sometimes not going outside at all. My mother was one of them and even told me I was so dark. She bleached my skin. Once, I got to United States I was sooo shocked. I cant believe people tan and over the years I just embraced my darker color. If my mother see my skin right now, shes not going to be happy. Anyway a mere exposure to sun for a minute just gives me tan.

Okay the narrator story is completely false in ancient not too far off Germanic cultures those people were pale pink they couldn't turn brown in the sun let alone turning brown by the sun when they were out doing hard labor if that's nonsense. Northern Europeans cant get brown without the help of chemicals.
However in the Greco Latin world to be pale was to be considered inferior in fact having light hair or red hair or even light blue eyes was considered sickly in the ancient Greco-Roman world that whole white skin is precious b is based solely by Germanic tribes Elites when they started to gain power and that was after the Renaissance

Modern beauty standards are tied to our profit driven world lol. You can't sell beauty to people who love themselves. That's why In Africa and Asia, especially parts where dark skin is common, the beauty standard is light skin. And in America and countries where everyone is naturally lighter, it's tan skin. Of course some standards are left over from earlier historical periods but the main idea is to tell people what the majority has is bad in order to sell a product. Unfortunate that skin color can be a trend. It's disgusting. Imagine feeling ugly for something you had no control over.

My dad and grandpa had a competition over who can get the most tan over the summer seasons that passed by, both would like to brag about their tan skin to other family members. Im Norwegian so theres not so much sun always, so then going on vacation to a much more warmer weather and climate to tan was something to brag about how tan you got when you were on vacation.
Also - if anyones wondering who won, my grandpa did. He had much more time than my dad to tan over the summer seasons.

I get a little bit sun when i go to the beach but i use the most high sun cream to protect me because idc about getting tanned. In south italy i remember when i was a teenager others used to make fun of me beign white like a mozzarella. I'm blonde and my skin is pretty delicate cause sun f me up pretty easy. Trends are just sheeps thinking things xD. A little bit of sun is good but always use protection.

(Edit) and ong in my opinion darker skin colors fit my style maybe that's why I hate being so white.

Has anyone here ever been shamed for being pale? Years ago i stopped doing outdoor activities like cycling and i worked indoors so i was pale. I was shamed (by white people) for being white! I re started cycling and i have more colour, but why the hate for pale skin? If we would make fun of dark skin we'd be racist.

I am naturally tanned(I look like jason momoa, without wanting to exaggerate) and I like women with super pale skin, to the point that they look Gothic or even authentic Goths. I think tanning takes away that beauty a little bit, besides it can harm the skin. :(
Well, at least I think. (I'm Brazilian)

You forgot to add what is fuelling the ''get tanned'' insanity in the 21st Century. There is no outcry if a person says ''I am proud of my dark-toned complexion''. But can you imagine the furore if someone said ''I am proud of my pale-coloured complexion''? Yeah. That.

Going to sun for 10-20 mins for vit d is enough and not being afraid of getting tan i actually like this trend CZ in Asia people bleaches their to whiten it and wears tons of sunscreen to not get black which means 'tan' and i am now confident these trend helped me a lot.

In Ancient times the pale people were considered inferior barbarians by the tanned Mediterranean type: the Romans and Arabian people who gave them everything: Algebra, trigonometria, Artes, Medicina, Alfabeto etc

Even though you want a tan skin, please wear sunscreen. Don't worry sunscreen still make your skin get tanned. Sunscreen will protect your skin from UV rays that'll make your skin look older and skin cancer
