What are the physics details of how (and why) Roentgen discovered x-rays and how did he discover the medical x-ray? Watch the video and find out mike: When a HS senior in 1964, a classmate and myself found an old cold cathode X-Ray tube in the physics lab storeroom. The physics teacher gave us permission to see if we could get it to work. My friend and I designed a power supply using an old neon sign transformer and a 1B3 HV rectifier tube from a B&W TV.
Out first try of taking a X-Ray of a leather key holder using a sheet of 4X5 Kodak Verichrome film did not work. The film, when developed, showed no sign of being exposed.
For our second try, we put a sheet of phosphorescent paper in with the film. This time the outline of the leather key holder with the keys inside were clearly visible.
The teacher was impressed as he did not think that we could get it to work.

The most interesting X-ray I had was the whole mouth one done for my wisdom teethe extraction. I don't remember the X-ray procedure all that much as these taken just before I had my wisdom teeth were pulled.
The extraction was a breeze as two of them had already erupted and the other two had grown in place in a vertical orientation. I was driving 4 hours after surgery and I went to the fair the next day. This was done a week before I went into the US Army.

your explanation is really good and your information seems to be reliable. I would love to use your information on a paper for university. however your reliable sources as you call them in your account discreption dont list where you found the information. (at least I didnt see it) You would help me out a lot if you could maybe give me your sources. Thank you in advance. Keep up the good and interesting videos; )

In german speaking countries, the X-rays are called Roentgen rays and the process itself is described by the verb roentgen. Thank you for the very interesting video!

In pre-wwii Budapest they would kill lice in hair with x-ray. The Nazis didnt kill mom but sarcoma did. More than likely from the x-ray application. Thanks for the video.

Tube had an opening in end and yet was a vacuum, or connected up to a machine that would create a vacuum. Didn't this cause a problem?

I'm a graduate student and I loved this video, it helped me a lot to comprehend the X-rays. Greetings from Brazil!

Thanks. Did you know that German hospitals don't have x-ray departments? It's always the Roentgen department.
