It's the year 219 BC; Hannibal started the Second Punic War by attacking the city of Saguntum. The siege lasted for 8 months before he stormed the town and captured it, paving the way towards Rome. Hannibal's army consisted mostly of African and Iberian mercenaries. The Saguntines were allied with Rome. Preoccupied with the Illyrian revolt, Rome did not send help to protect the city even though they had warning of an attack by the Carthaginians two years before the attack. Hannibal, a sworn enemy of Rome, prepared his massive campaign against the still young Roman Republic and keep their dominance in the Mediterranean. By taking Saguntum, the Carthaginian general would be able to fund his mercenary army and obtain some support from the senate to move against Rome. During this time, Hannibal did not truly have full support of the Carthaginian senate even after astounding victories. The brilliance of Hannibal's command was already shown as his army marched towards the city, outmaneuvering an army of Iberians and defeating them on the battlefield. This battle is key because it is depicted as the start of the Second Punic War. This battle was realized using Rome 2 Total War with the Divide et Impera mod. My comment will not please you. Presenting a barbaric bloodthirsty deed as a heroic event is immoral. Hannibal leveled a peaceful town to the ground and killed every single living creature in it, the dogs including, driven only by his hatred towards Roma and the desire to force the Romans into war. Well, we all know how that ended.
