Spartacus marched with his followers to the south of Italy where he would fight vs Crassus of Rome after a failed negotiation attempt for a truce. Crassus was recently given praetorship along with 6 legions of Rome to fight and end Spartacus' Third Servile War which has plagued the republic for the last few years. Starting his revolt from Capua, Spartacus now has a total of 40k to 50k fighters he can command. Although not fully trained and lacking the discipline of the Roman legions, Spartacus wanted to find a peaceful solution after his recent victories. He knew that facing the Roman army face to face may be devastating for his rebellion. In 71 BC, Spartacus was forced to face Crassus on the field of battle near the Sele River. He was facing 40, 000 professional soldiers. Spartacus's numbers were similar but his fighters were less equipped. Spartacus slew his horse thinking that he wouldn't need him, whether they would win or lose. If he won't he wouldn't have to flee anymore and if he lost, he would be dead and there would be no use to him. Crassus knew that many of the Roman soldiers feared Spartacus and his viciousness in combat. So he decimated his army, killing 10% of his total troops to make them fear Crassus more than Spartacus. The outcome of this battle would be decided on the open field. This is a historical cinematic total war battle. Roma Invictus! It was both Marcus Crassis and Julius Caesar who defeated Spartacus and the slave rebels. Pompey swooped in at the last minute to get most of the glory and credit. But he along with Crassis and Caesar formed a powerful political trio. Great video!
