Why didn\'t Turkey fight in WW2? Documentary VersusARCH: The question is not why Turkey opted to stay neutral until the very end but why Germany didn't pressure it in, say, August 1941. into letting German troops and aircraft use its territory as a staging point to attack the Caucasus oilfields and refineries. Damaging or destroying those would have been a major blow to the USSR (and capturing, them almost a must for Germany in the long run, and Germany just might scrape together a force to invade Turkey if it refused (untapped German ally Bulgaria might have been used to help in that endeavor.

Turkey facilitated secret weapons transfers from Nazi Germany to their Middle East allies, such as the German planes and vehicles used in Iraq's 1941 fascist coup.
Also fascism was an remains extremely popular there, Turkey's Grey Wolves neo-fascist movement is quite mainstream, photos of Erdogan doing their fascist hand gesture are easily available.

Staying out and not taking a side (where the good guys side is clear) is pathetic.
But what is funny, is declaring war when 3d Reich was dying, just to get some of the gains of the winners (and show that they are not against them) and just for history to write that Turkey DID declare war to 3rd Reich (yes there are people only reading the brief.

Yes Turkey didnt join the war but it went bad for them too, they had to be carefull and they had taken precautions too, and when Germany said Turkey to join the war, TR said they cant because of the USSR might have attacked them, they officaly joined the war but didnt attack, so they could join the united nations

actually, Turkiye declared war against Japan, so they wouldnt have to fight. it was just on paper. Yet, Japans was so angry about it, they didn't talk much with Turkiye more than 20 years, up untill the time ertugrul ship was found. I understand them though, but we were in a bad times, yes, even than now.

Thanks for Ismet Pasha's diplomatic skills. He is a great diplomat as well as a commander. Managing both sites and convince to not to join war is a big thing. After Ataturk dies he solve our last independent problems with not joining to WW2 fight. Respect Ismet Inonu.

In Syria we learnt that the reason was because France didn't want them to fight the war and the catch was to give them Antioch province in return which was part of the Syrian republic, since Syria was a French colony.

Short answer: they just were pusses and didn't want to fight against the nazi threat. Probably would side with the Germans too, like ww1. Maybe they were busy doing their own genocides just like the nazis

Between 1911-22 Turkiye fought wars in Libya, Balkan, WW1 and in Anatolian war 1919-22 with invading enemies. More than 10 years of war. It barely survived those wars. Starting another war would be insane.

Turkey signed the Balkan Pact with Greece (yes Greece, Yugoslavia and Romania in 1934 against Italian expansionism but it declined because of invasion of Yugoslavia
reply

Not only they declared war when it was safe for them to do so, they had the audacity to ask from the allies the greek islands to be handed to them, for helping

Sinti refugees from Germany went to Turkey and asked for asylum. It was denied and they were deported back and gassed in Auschwitz
