What happened to the Dutch Empire? Why did it Collapse and what caused it to fall apart? The Netherlands built an impressive empire, including South Africa, Indonesia and Suriname to name a few colonies. But why did it collapse? What caused the Dutch to lose so many colonies so quickly and what were the effects of this?

I cant recall exactly the theory, but one of the theories about post-WWII and it no longer being accepted for empires to exist; is the advancement in technology. No longer was it dangerous to send mail/communications through hostile territory, you can just send a coded radio message. No longer did you need to secure a port for trading, all you need was a naval fleet to secure your goods. Essentially, it was not the good nature of people, but the practicality of it all. It was written in a book, but I cant remember the author if anyone knows, please drop a comment.

Can we all just agree that if The Netherlands held onto Indonesia it wouldn't be as impoverished as it is today, I mean hell. The Netherlands has the biggest port in Europe and the best Infrastructure in Europe and a high GDP and GDP per capita for such a small nation, They could have improved the living conditions in Indonesia and built great things to improve life there, The Netherlands built good infrastructure in Indonesia and excellent bridges, The Netherlands has great engineers so many things could have been made.

As a sidenote many of the Dutch servicemen who were sent to suppress the Indonesian independence movement had been Nazi supporters or served in Dutch units in the SS; it was how the Dutch made them repay their debt to society without incurring the cost(s) of imprisoning them (or executing them as traitors which largely offended the humanistic sensibilities of the Dutch.

Britain stole most of it
name one important nation with a significant part in the colonial world that wasn't mugged by Britain.
sorry Dutch but you aren't alone. Everyone has that phase of the UK bullying them. Except Belgium who Britain protected but they aint too important other than the fact they kicked the crap out of Germany in the Liege

The Dutch colonized Indonesia for 350 years, to take our spices and territory, which had a huge impact on our country, starting from the system, history and education in our country. maybe worse, we don't know if there is a history that was changed or destroyed from generation to generation

lol, sounds missleading! according to the literal local history, fought against the Dutch and Japanese for independence, the only reason Indonesia managed to proclaim independence was the surrender of Japan 1945. and only later in 1949 when it is internationally recognized as a country

The so-called ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao) just off the shores of Venezuela do enjoy significant social- and infrastructure benefits identical to the provinces in The Netherlands over in Europe. I think that's quite the advantage over many former colonies.

It should be added that the Dutch East Indies were basically. Second verse same as the first.
Spain would go into America and do atrocities.
The Dutch would go into Indonesia and do atrocities.
Brittainia would go into Africa and do atrocities.

Great content! Short, informative, and memorable!
One complaint though: the audio is kind of crummy.
It's muddy and overly compressed (analog compression.
I suggest using a better microphone for starters.

Pressure from the US and United nations exerted on the Dutch to give up West Papua so Indonesia could add it to its country. Big mistake, imo, it should've joined the eastern side as an island nation of Papua.

The British AVE Dutch should have banded together for strength.
The Spanish and Portuguese at least agreed to not fight over territory.
Though, Portugal got way more of South America than agreed.

reply

Say the European pie should have never give up their colonies these colonies should have been kept and Americans should have took colonies too we should have turned South America into a giant colony

Even British schools do not teach about evils of colonialism of British Empire. They seem to have come out of it and live without any guilt or remorse which is unfortunate and pathetic.
reply

Imagine if they held on to New Holland (Australia) and New Zealand. The resources and wealth would had made them one of the most powerful nations.
reply

Since the incorporation of Democracy, Every Western Empire collapsed because they refused to grant equal citizenship to all their subjects.

-Dutch Damn Brits stole my empire!
-French, Spanish, Portuguese, Ottomans, Zulus, Germans, Chinese, Persians and Mughals: First time?

reply

Omg you have separate characters for Queen Wilhelmina and Queen Juliana since Wilhelmina abdicated in 1948. That's attention to detail.
reply

Napoleon, 1672 and interference from other powers preventing the Dutch to remain order in their territory like Indonesia and belgium
reply

And now the Brits stole Unilever and Shell in recent years, two of our biggest companies. (ok they were also party brittish but still)
