The United States of America. The USA. America. The Land of the Free. These are just some of the names for that continental sized nation which Alaska wishes it could touch. You'll be surprised to know that other names were considered for the new nation during the American Revolution against Britain and that a name wasn't settled on until the Constitutional Congress. Until other ideas, like Columbia or Fredonia were proposed. So why did the Founding Fathers choose the name 'United States of America' Bryan: Whew. I'm so glad I can abbreviate it US or USA and not Fred. I also like the genericity of the name. It just curbs the romanticism level of any patriotism a smidge so people keep their brains running a tiny bit more. (For this same reason Dept. of Homeland Security still strikes me as uncharacteristically nationalistic for the USA versus the more sanguine possible name Dept. of Domestic Security. But I never called the shots) Of course, I guess a name like Fred. can't get anyone too romantically carried away either.

The British Colonists were the first to coin themselves as Americans but not attributing to revolutionary ideas against the British overseers but it was based on the idea of Queen Elizabeth I had boosted the name America from Her colonial competitor The Pope of Rome.
The United States is designed as a schizm of the first Empire.

I kind of hate how generic and bureaucratic sounding United States is. And the term American is ambiguous, because anyone from North, Central, or South America could also be referred to as an American. I propose that we immediately rename the country Hamburgundy. It's the obvious choice, really.

Spanish uses an adjective for American that isn't Americano - Estadounidense. literally UnitedStatesian. Americano is strange for Spanish speakers because 'America' is more associated with the two continents than the US. But it might be different depending on the country. Not sure.

This calls for an alternative history fantasy author writing a (series of) book(s) about German speaking Fredonia with either New Germania or New Berlin as its capital city. Of course with the German word Neu for New in that capital's name.

The first time I read the title and saw the thumbnail, I thought it was going to be about who named each of the individual states maybe a future video idea?

United States should be called new China because China is better than the United States. Alaska will be new Mongolia, Texas will be new Xinjiang, California will be new Guangdong and New York will be new Zhejiang

north korea and south korea people are koreans. north vietnam and south vietnma are vietnamese. north america and south america are americans. geography doesn't determine the nomenclature of the people.

AFAIK before the American revolution British colonies in America and the Caribbean where simply known as British America and the North was only added post US independence

Liberia could've been a candidate instead of Fredonia, Liberia sounds better and was only used a century after the Declaration of Independence.

There is a strong argument that America doesn't come from Vespucci but rather a mountain range in central America called Americas.
reply

Obviously they wouldnt keep the name united colonies because then theyd get sued by nbc 200 years later and a slave revolt within 20.
