It might seem odd to ask why New Zealand is an independent nation but in the late nineteenth century, its inclusion in Australia was seen as a certainty. Yet, as you'll know, it never joined the Commonwealth of Australia. But why? To find out watch this short and simple animated documentary

In 1901 the only way to travel from the east coast of Australia to Western Australia was by sea as no road or railway existed and there were no airships in Australia. the Trans Australian Railway was opened in 1916, the first commercial aircraft flights took place in the 1930's and the road was constructed during World War 2. The sea distance from Sydney to Perth, via Melbourne, was more than twice the distance from Sydney to Wellington NZ direct.

Ha, wow, didn't realize race was such a factor for both groups.
New Zealand: We won't join Australia unless you make your Constitution less racist against the Maori.
Australia: Done. Oh, and just so you know, once you're a part of us, you'll get a lot of Chinese immigrants. But you're not racist, so that shouldn't be a problem.
New Zealand: What? We hate the Chinese! Deal's off!

As a kiwi I must say Aussie is a great neighbour and country but thats all theyre going to be and thats gonna be our relationship as much as I would not want any of the country to take their place and that theyre an amazing community I dont think we should join their community

As an Australian, NZ is saving themselves by not joining Australia and remaining independent. They seem to have a great thing going with Jacinda Ardern. They wouldn't want to be involved with out political nightmare

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that 1000 miles of sea separates them. that's like saying spain should be part of greece. Just cos they are vaguely in the same direction people assume they are the same.

I don't think Australia may want NZ today. NZ's been overrun with authoritarians/communists in their govt. and Australia is waking up to the insidiousness of Chinese meddling in their economy.
reply

NZ: you guys are dicks to natives we will never join you.
AST: lit my man, that rule doesnt apply to you anymore sorry for the inconvenience.
NZ: I hate the Chinese get away from me

_There are only two things I can't stand in this world: People who are intolerant of other people's cultures. and the Chinese! _ - Prime Minister of New Zealand, probably

0: 18 - a better Canadian comparison would be Newfoundland, they were independent same as New Zealand for decades before eventually joining Canada in 1949.

Also, if New Zealand joins Australia, the Five Eyes will become the Four Eyes, immediately going from ominous to nerdy and the spies just can't have that.
reply

kinda staggering that New Zealand's reasons for not wanting to join Australia were that Australia was too racist & also that it was not racist enough.
reply

New. Zealand s was actually under the control of NSW way before federation then made independent it was not independently run to begin with.

It seems like the vast majority of Kiwis live in Sydney anyway. For a long time you didn't even need a passport to visit one from the other.

So in conclusion, New Zealand did not join the Australians because New Zealanders are racist. Thank you for the video explanation!

Kind of like, Why are Canada and the U. S. two separate countries? That might be more complicated, but ya same idea.
reply

I'm glad it didn't happened otherwise we wouldn't have been able to witness the epic cricket rivalry between the two.
