One of the main impacts of the Ottoman capture of Constantinople was Europe lost contact with access to the Silk Road. Result Christopher Columbus decided to see if there was a western route to Asia. This led to a new chapter in Western European exploration of the Americas, not always a very good result for the original inhabitants of the Americas, the development of trade and somewhat the discovery of the western route to Asia.

the fall of rome in the west in 476 ended the antiquity era and started the medieval era. the fall of rome in the east ended the medieval era and started the renaissance which precisely is the rebirth if classic antiquity but without the romans. impressive empire which marked the beginning and end of 2 distinct eras
reply

Don't forget that the fall of Constantinople also marked the beginning of the Renaissance!
Greek scholars brought their knowledge to Italy, which was all about the Classic period. To be inspired by it and surpass it.

reply

I love Europe back then was just like a villain organization in movies. They care little for each other which usually led them to demise usually by the central characters. Of course western individuality and all.
reply

the greeks called themselves roman right up until the start of the war in 1800s. They're the successor to the Eastern roman empire. Agia Sofia is greek orthodox, the same language as modern Greeks.
reply

People forget that the Byzantines were nightmare to the Europeans for centuries and never really give a damn about them.
Eastern and Western Christians hated each other more than Muslims.

reply

Actually the fall of Constantinople was worrisome for most people in the Christian World. Everyone at the time considered it an apocalyptic event and that the end of times were coming
reply

We hungarians were probably terrified because we knew the ottomans won't be stopped by anyone after that to knock at our borders and invade our country for one and a half centuries.
reply

Something interesting to notice is that in 1453 Europe population was way smaller than during crusades. So people did not want to leave their home for hasardous aventures as before
reply

Venice 1204: sacked Rome, deposed Byzantine Emperor, taken over the city, formed small kingdoms.
Venice 1453: have we lost our trade dominance in Istanbul? It is a disaster.

reply

They didn't really care. Venezians opened the gates for the ottomans in constantinople and the vatican/rome took all scripts and books they had, later came the renaissance
reply

Ottoman Empire was the third Roman Empire! Istanbul is the capital of the world as Napoleon once said and it will always be. Whoever hold the city is the new Roman Empire.
reply

Byzanthians were rival to vatican, so catolic world was not so sad, they became only head of christianity, because christianity used to belong to greeks
reply

The fall of Constantinople led indirectly to Columbus discovering America just 39 years later because Europe's main route to India was cut off
reply

Why didn't Italians start this new Crusade to retake Constantinople from the Muslims? Constantinople should have remained a Christian city!
reply

In my opinion the fall of Constantinople is what started the arms race in Europe that allowed them to counqure most of the world.
reply

You forget the most important reason; In every crusade Ottomans kicked crusaders' asses and they never forget those defeats.
reply

Well, we Italians have done whatever it was possible to keep the city in Roman's hands. We sent Giovanni Giustiniani.
reply

Now all mfs across the world be like we'll retake Constantinople when even the world back then didn't give a f
