Why did the Kalmar Union and Denmark-Norway Collapse?

Why did the Kalmar Union and Denmark-Norway Collapse? Fun video. The emphasis on the collapse of Denmark-Norway felt a bit strange to me. AFAIK here wasnt much anti-Danish sentiment in Norway and what Ive learned is that most Norwegians were quite happy with a (faraway) king in Copenhagen.
After the Kiel treaty there was a bid for Norwegian Independence in 1814, but it was largely orchestrated by the Danish crown-prince whose long term plan probably including re-uniting Norway with Denmark. That plan collapsed when Sweden actually put some military might behind their claim. The constitution of 1814 was never fully revoked however and that was useful in the successful bid for Norwegian independence in 1905. After which the Norwegian government invited a Danish prince to serve as King of Norway (his grandson still sits on our throne today.\r\n

No, Finland and Iceland are -NOT- Scandinavia. That's just from a standpoint of ignorance. Those countries are the NORDIC countries. The Nordic countries are Scandinavia plus Finland and Iceland (and by implication some additional territories. Scandinavia is, and has always been since the term was coined, Norway+Denmark+Sweden.
As for the unions. it's unlikely that it would have happened in the configuration if not for the Black Death, and it's unlikely that Denmark-Norway would have been united also. The Black Death was particularly devastating for Norway, economically, and the country lost its strong political position afterwards.

There's an error in your video regarding the Nordic 7 years war: It was Frederich II of Denmark (not Christian III, Frederick's father) who put the Swedish coat of arms into his insignia. Christian III died before this, and he was generally in favour of a conciliatiry policy towards Sweden. Even Gustav I Vasa, who was always semi-paranoid towarda Denmark-Norway, admitted on Christians's death in 1559 that he has just lost an excellent neighbour.
Frederick II, on the other hand, turned out to be a hot-head at the beginning of his reign, and was looking for an excuse to break the alliance with Sweden and declare war.

TLDR; Union of Kalmar collapsed because the Swedish were dissatisfied with being ruled by, admittedly often harsh, Danes. Denmark - Norway did not collapse; Norway was stolen from us after British aggression had forced us on the losing side of the Napoleonic Wars. It was instead given to Sweden, which was ruled by a turncoat Napoleonic Marshall.
And let us not talk of our ancestral lands in Skaane, Halland and Blekinge, which they also stole.
And people wonder why I hate Sweden.
I love Swedes, they are nice, but the country is an abomination.

Fun fact about the bombing of Copenhagen in 1807. Besides being the first bombing directed against a civilian population using moderne weaponry. After the Brits stole the Danish Royal Navy. King Frederig VI. made a command to grow a new and vast oak forrest to rebuild the the danish navy.
Back in 2003 the admiralty of the danish navy declared to the minister of defense and our current Queen - Margrethe II. who is the highest ranking officer in the navy. That the Danish Royal navy was ready to be rebuildt,

Finland is geographically Scandinavian, but is not ethnically or linguistically Scandinavian at all.
Iceland isn-t geographically Scandinavian per se, but ethnically and linguistically very Scandinavian, as Iceland was settled by mostly Norwegian (and a few Danish and Swedish) Vikings.
Arguably, Iceland is the most Scandinavian ethnically and linguistically of the Nordic countries. Icelandic is very similar to Old Norse (the language the Vikings spoke) and Iceland is also a very homogeneous country.

Even before Gustav Wasa Sweden was military opposing the Danes. Perhaps mostly during Sten Sture the Elder in the 1500th century. The Kalmar union were becomming most beneficial to Denmark and Denmark was the old archenemy of Sweden, who often wielded war on Sweden. How could the union could ever survive under danish dominance.
Trivia: there was a union between Sweden and Norway in 1319 until 1355 when dissolved through splitting heritage of Magnus Eriksson into Sweden and Norway.

It did not Collapse!
Norway was handed to Sweden as gift after the fall of Napolion, Denmark sided with Napoleon while Sweden sided with England; Sweden did not have a air to the trone, so they elected one of Napoleon's Generals but he would not accept the appointment unless he also would get Norway. Since Denmark-Norway was on the losing sideThe Teretorry of Norway was handed to Sweden as gift for its loyalty to the winning side

Fun fact about Gustav Vasa: He was only much later (after his death) be known by that name. In his day, dynastic names like Vasa wasn't that established until the 17th century in Sweden. Furthermore, the man we know as Gustav had a thing for constantly changing the spelling and pronunciation of his name (like a early Starbucks prank) so in one document he signed -Gustav-, another -Gystaf- and so on.

I think we can give it another try. I have seen people say -We tried that before- yeah 600 years ago, times have changed. Instead of 1 King or Queen of all 3 countries we can elect an Emporer and the current kings and queens can keep their thrones. Doesnt sound all that bad to me, we are very closely connected both Culturally, Linguisticly and ethniclly. I do believe in a modern united Scandinavia.
reply

Few people refer to all five as -Scandinavian-, they are referred to as -The Nordic countries-. Scandinavia is just the three countries on the Scandinavian peninsula (Sweden, Denmark, Norway) sometimes people call Finland Scandinavian but are quickly corrected, usually by the Finns. Iceland is never called Scandinavian
reply

ehm no iceland norway and sweden are collectively called nordic countrys (and shetlands but w. e), denmark sweden and norway are scandinavia, finland is a baltic or more specifically an uralic country culturally quite seperate from the others mentioned and much more related to the other baltics

It's a shame that Norway lost most of its land and territories simply due to Danish led wars. Seems that when Denmark lost, they gave away mostly Norwegian territories instead of their own. And when Norway finally got independent, Denmark decided to keep Norway's old possessions.

I think the brilliance of Margrethe I can hardly be overstated. A woman joing three countries by diplomacy in 1397. She could not legally by 'queen' in Denmark, so they had to invent a long title for her.

Rather than taking lessons from dubious American historians regarding the history of the Nordic nations, can we all just agree that the US is nothing but a rebel province of Canada and in no way a real country?
reply

I think we'll see a Nordic union sometime in the future. We already have the Nordic Council and its importance seems to grow. We are so alike and we can do so much more being united. Especially militarily.
reply

Don't call me Scandinavian!
11 seconds into the video and you've managed to piss off 3 nations. Finland and Iceland for calling us Scandinavian, and the Faroese whom you've presumably not even mentioned.

reply

Ok lets reunite the kalmar union and add the north seas empire onto it. Then lets remake the polish lithuanian common wealth, give them their peek territory. They then go to war with each other.
reply

I know for a fact that a lot of Scandinavian viewers (Danes, Norwegians and Swedes) will vehemently disagree with about 700 years of their history compressed into about 10 minutes of narrative.
reply

Almost like unions where you are effectively just taking control over an existing country and people often just grows resentment which means when there's an opportunity to leave they will.
reply

can't be bothered watching this, I am Danish, and the Kalmar union was Denmark, Norway and Sweden. so from thumbnail and title, I can already gather this is shoddily researched.
reply

Finland's not a scandinavian country, cuz it's not on scandinavian peninsula nor is it germanic. Finland's a nordic country. Didn't expect this kind of mistake a history video smh
reply

I find this quite offensive to Norwegians. We were oppressed and never wanted to be a colony by neither Sweden nor Denmark. -Enige og troe, indtil Dovfre falder! -
reply

Ah aha ha. Finland is not Scabdinavia. Finland is one of the Nordic countries. In Scandinavia they talk Scandinavian. Finland has their own proud origin.
reply

I clicked this video not to learn about the dissolution of the Kalmar Union, but because I was heretofore unaware that such a union existed. Thanks!
reply

The Scandinavian countries are Norway, Sweden and Denmark! The Nordic countries are Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland

Denmark Norway never -collapsed-, it came apart as Norway wanted out and was given the opportunity after the Napoleonic war.

reply

The video is not very truthful. If you are going to tell the story of other countries, you should do proper research.
