What a great post. My nonna used to call us that and I kinda knew it meant a kid who wasn't behaving because that was always the context, but I wanted to know exactly what it meant. It seemed like such a strange word. i asked a cousin in Italy once and she said, Monello is monello (with gesture--pointing at her kid, as though the meaning resided within the word itself and that there was no other possible definition.
I really enjoyed learning the etymology and it does add to the idea of benign mischief. Thanks for this post.

How interesting! I guess in Brazilian Portuguese perhaps this would correspond to 'moleque' but if the meaning is not pejorative, perhaps 'capetinha' (meaning 'little devil')would be more like it, but only if one says it with a sweet intonation. I hope I got it right from what you explained in Italian cause I'm just a very beginner in Italian Saluti dal Brasile! Grazie di cuore, carissima insegnante!

Grazie per questo video, molto interessante. Non sapevo che la parola moinel era a l'origine di questa parola italiana!
In francese monello si tradurrebbe in polisson o garnement.
