This archery riddle is a deceptively simple brain teaser by Sam Lloyd. At an archery competition, whoever scores a total closer to 100 points would win the game. The points on the target are: 16, 17, 23, 24, 39 and 40. There is no restriction on number of arrows to be used. The young lady who carried off the first prize scored exactly one hundred points. Can you figure out how did she accomplish the score of exactly 100 points It's one of the easiest puzzles, but, believe me, many people think it's impossible to solve. Try to solve this seemingly easy but baffling riddle with a pen and a paper. 40 and 39 can be ignored temporarily because they can be made from smaller numbers. The remaining are 20-4, 20-3, 203, 204. With 4 arrows, you have 80 4 lots of /- 3, 4 in some combination. With 5 arrows, it's 100 5 smaller bits, and with 6 arrows it's 120 /- 6 smaller bits. Only with 6 arrows can you get the /- to exactly match up to get you to 100. And you can't merge any pairs of them back into the 39 and 40 arrows.

So need to make no less than 100 by 16 23 and 39
One soln by 16
Then easily move through 16 replace by 23 or 39
Faster results.

Two arrows on 40 and one arrow exactly on the line between the 17 zone and the 23 zone. (We are already assuming an archer with perfect accuracy, right That's necessary for the problem) An arrow on the line should be awarded the average points of the two zones: (17 23)/2 = 20. Hence, 40 40 20 = 100.

Notice that each score can be written as A) nx51 or B nx52 also notice that 100= 20x5 to reach 20x5 we have to add either ABB or AAAB only in these cases you can fom extra groups of five. with any other combination will be impossible to form 20 groups of five.

I noticed that 100/6 is about 16. 67, meaning some combination of 16s and 17s will do the trick.
From there it's just guess and check
