This music theory lesson explains escape notes, what they are and how to use them. When it comes to inessential notes many musicians understand passing notes, understand auxiliary notes, and are happy about anticipatory notes. But what about escape notes, also known as escape tones or echappee? Here we explain what they are and clarify the various ways in which these patterns qualify as echappee. Examples of these non-chord and non-harmonic tones are written and played. Useful for performers and composers alike. to escape notes 0:24 - What are inessential notes? 3:00 - How does an escape note work?

Hi Gareth. Is it possible to have an accidental, say F not F# or is it according to the key signature. You say it is always unaccented, but below in the comments you are asked if it can be accented and you say yes. Have I read that correctly or is it a typo. Thanks in advance.

-Inessential notes- is perhaps itself a misnomer, since a piece a music could be very dull indeed if the melody contained only chord tones. -Inessential notes- are often an essential ingredient in the -Tension- component of the -Tension and Release- concept. Great video, as always.

Hi Gareth. Always very interesting your free videos alongside your courses. Thank you. What I personally find even more puzzling are changing notes. Maybe you find the time to highlight this kind of NCT in one of your future videos just as an idea.

Thank you for doing this,Gareth. Your content made me get back my interest in playing the piano, and producing music in general.
