Some people experience trauma at an early age and robs them of this sense of safety and security, and they often grow up to carry that trauma with them well into their adulthood. Defined as the experience of a single or multiple events by a child that is emotionally painful or distressful, studies show that childhood trauma often leads to serious lifelong damages to ones mental and physical health. Have you ever wondered how such experiences could impact a person? While there are a lot of ways childhood trauma can have an effect on us, here are the main ways they shape your view on life

I'm starting- no. I've already realized I have trauma and what caused it and today I randomly searched specifically for this video.
I personally haven't been abused but me mother was. Now I don't know why but already I was about to write a sentence about, people and how much I think of how negatively they can react to my entire multiple page long comment. but I'll type it anyway, even though the video mentioned this,
Don't think I'm falsely playing victim or say how does this affect you, when it should obviously be affecting your mother? I was a 4yrs old who didn't even remember leaving the house to go to kindergarten and pre- pre-primary school hadn't started yet therefore I didn't know anyone else except for my family. This was the scariest part because to me I was stuck with my abusive father as a defenseless little girl.
(P. S. I'm not even old enough to know what I want to identify as, let alone what gender preferences I have ect. I am basically saying I'm still very young)
btw just realized as a kid till I was a preteen (currently) I've also had two friends (two types of toxic friends l think) that are adding to this.
Now since you know I've seen my mother get abused and just read that my father is/was
(realized that it sounds like I don't trust my father can/will change, but I have reason to not trust him trust me)
It may have clicked in your head already, my mother was abused by my father. Once again like I said the FIRST time was when I was 4. I used to be hyper active then and I was hypermobile (basically was really flexible but I got really bad back, leg and arm pain and I eventually got a bad back injury that caused it to stop/go away and I used to do extreme ballet but now I can't even do a side split)
still am but only around people I trust might not judge, make fun of, or leave me for seeming like I'm, annoying, attention seeking, or needy.
I woke up because I wasn't sleepy just to give you a mental image imagine a 4yr old that's colored, a little shorter and lighter than average, wearing a pink onesie, holding a baby blanket that was a pretty vibrant red, sucking her left index finger and middle finger at the same time
(yes I know I wasn't a baby anymore and it sounds gross but I think I figured out why I did it)
I got up and heard yelling so I did what you normally shouldn't do when your parents are fighting and I went and watched. My mom was in tears and my dad and his sister, my aunt, was there her nickname is Tete (teh-teh) for pronunciation. They were talking about her.
(btw I'm from south Africa and my siblings were living in Zimbabwe with my grandparents for the first 7-8yrs I think of my life, so back then I didn't know they existed either until I turned six the first time visiting them since I was 3)
I've always struggled to listen, understand what I'm hearing pay attention and all of a sudden my ears were sharp but for some reason I still couldn't understand it sounded like gibberish even when they were taking turns and speaking slowly (I'm surprised I passed kindergarten) suddenly my dad hit my mom. The sharp movement blurred, my eyes hurt and my mom started crying even more my mom she spotted me confused I didn't even know what happened she picked me up and used my blanket to tie me to her back incase I fell. Surprisingly I knew the concept of sad and I blamed my mom's sadness on Tete. My mom ran with me on her back in the rain at 9pm and my dad drove the car to drop Tete off at her house I wonder if I wasn't on my mother's back would my dad have run her over? more stories but it would take years to write and read so maybe I'll come back to write another story no one will read

I cant tell if it was or wasn't trauma anymore, I'm autistic and was always severely bullied and seen as a joke, my mum always screamed at me and when i told her to stop she wouldnt, she would threaten to record my meltdowns and show it to everyone, once she went up to me, pulled my ear then screamed in my ear and it makes me tear up thinking about it. my older brother was always protecting me but since he moved out ive been alone, it seemed like my mum cared but shed also always make jokes about me having no friends and said if she knew i had autism she wouldve aborted me (she said it jokingly and my sister laughed and it made me sad) and my brother always told me to move out as soon as possible, my dad was good but he was really lazy. my mum would always use my autism to get perks and as leverage in arguments. she would also always say no wonder when i told her i was being bullied. whenever i tried to say something to her about feeling sad she'd turn it into her problems and complain at me. its to the point where hearing her voice makes me really irritated. ive got to mention she did have trauma its just she always invalidates me because she thinks shes never done wrong. if i were to speak to her about my mental health she'd probably want to either put me in a psych ward (shes threatened me with it before) or probably turn it into something about herself. i dont know what to do anymore. sometimes i scratch and bite myself when im stressed and people always are mean to me about it but it feels invalid because its not like im using a blade or anything and its not frequently. idk someone give me advice idc if its shit advice that will make it worse i just need suggestions

I can relate to this so much.
I remember once my teacher asked us to tell our earliest childhood memories especially happy ones
But there was nothing happy about my childhood. I watched everyone one of my friends talk about their parents and their happy yet simple time being a child. I wishmine was like that toowhen the teacher asked mei was already crying silently.
You seemy mom and dad fought a lotmy earliest childhood memories only consist of me crying under the dining tablewhile I heard them slap eachother and scream at eachotherit subconsciously broke me into pieces. never one had I seen them happy together. my mom and my dad had a divorce a year laterwhen I was 9 my father reappeared in my life causing great stress for me.
He was the reason my mom had to work so hard now and he simply did not even care about me he wanted to show off to his friends about me and how intelligent I was and am
When I was nearing my 10th birthday. I started having these sudden compulsions and these weird type of obsessions with cleanliness to the point that a skin allergy made my skin black on my arms due to the constant washing and sanitizer rubbing on my hand
We went to a child psychiatrist to find out what really happened.
Turns out I had OCD (Obsessive compulsive disorder)
I was given therapy for a long time until I went back to normal
It comes back everyone 6 months. in different ways
When asked for the cause my therapist said it was due to childhood trauma.
Im still not that greatbut Im happy that I was able to beat it at least a little

Idk if this is actually relevant but Imma say it anyways
Throughout primary school (yes I'm British) I was bullied A LOT, Like pretty much every day. It was always these two specific kids that would do it, and everyone else in the classroom including the teachers would either not notice or just dismiss me, it was so bad that I ended up stealing my mum's phone and looked up How to stop people bullying me. My mom obviously saw the search history and was extremely worried for me, often picking me up from school during lunch to go get Mcdonald's and come back once lunch was over just so I wouldn't have to deal with the bullies. I did have a large friend group at the time, about 7+ friends, but they were mostly just there because of my best friend who was considered a cool kid in our friend group, so he was always too preoccupied with other stuff to really help. Anyways, I think primary school really affected my view of the world and it ended up making it really hard to gain my trust, I just kinda don't trust people anymore and my brain is constantly telling me that someone out there is out to get me even tho nobody knows who I am. then I got real pessimistic and stuff and only really got comfortable around my friends, even now my anxiety gets the better of me a lot.
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk I guess, I doubt anyone's gonna see this but I hope you have a lovely day.

I had a mom who was so worried about providing for me so I could be happy, that she left me with a neglecting babysitter and older family member. I never shared anything that I experienced with anyone until I was much older and heard how other people described their childhoods to be like. Later when I talked about this stuff to my therapist, she was absolutely aghast of what I had been through from age 4 to 16.
All that time, I thought it was perfectly normal for me (a 5 year old) to be making my own meals and cookies (I wasn't allowed to use the stove or oven but had to prepare everything. I thought it was normal to have food that I made be given in access to the family dogs while I was limited on how much I could eat. I thought it was normal to have to play quietly in a room by myself and not watch tv, go outside, or really have anything aside my imagination. I had no idea why I struggled with friendships, or was so shy, or socially isolated myself. I just accepted it.
It all has made sense now, and all I can do is just take one baby step forward day by day to try and over come what I thought was normal.

My fathers death at a young age was profoundly traumatic to me. I truly feel that your age during which the trauma or loss occurs is the age that your psyche can permanently remain at. No matter where I go, no matter how much time passes by, no matter how mentally healthy I feel on good days, or how injured and upset I feel on bad days. to me. its ALWAYS the summer of 01. and after all this time. I paradoxically like to re-visit the places that bore such significance, and somehow re-live, or re-experience certain moments or emotions for a strange sense of restorative and comforting nostalgia, even if brutal. For if enough time passes by, you can somehow embrace your pain as a defining and sacred moment in your life. Maybe coming in with wiser eyes, or a wiser frame of mind does the trick. or perhaps seeking to re-fight the fight, but on MY terms. Maybe its a defense mechanism, who knows? I guess this is what Freud meant when he said one day, the years of your worst struggles will strike you as the most cherished

I had a pretty good childhood until fifth grade, where everyone in class bullied me, I was a tattletale so teachers couldnt help me, and the worst part a good friend of mine betrayed me.
Middle school added more salt to the wound, despite moving to a new town after fifth grade. Many classmates were toxic and potentially creepers, and their behaviors exposed me to the existence of racism. When I moved to another town in high school, the kids were more well behaved than the others because of a nicer environment but the teachers wouldnt listen to my needs, and they kept pressuring me to the point where I attempted suicide a few times! I never went to college right after graduating, and have been spending my scarred life just loafing around at home with my family. Even then, I struggle to communicate with my family to this day, and its been damaging my mental health Ive been trying to heal.

I caused stress in my relationship with my loved one because I was reflecting the trauma from my childhood onto us. I never purposefully meant it, I was/am just so sad and anxious and I overwhelmed him. I was/am so scared to be alone, so I took too much of his space so I could imagine I was secure and and happy. He did make me feel secure and happy, but I forced some of it onto him to help me, which was unfair to him completely. Were on a break right now, and it is hurting me because I have an anxious attachment style, but Im taking the time to better myself and teach myself that I cannot become what I grew up with. So with all of my love, I hope he is doing better right now and Im so sorry for not giving you enough of your own space. Im getting help!

So much rainclouds around, i don't even know how to clear all of em, sometimes when i watch something that remind me about happiness, the rainclouds doesn't exist for a moment before it come back. There are many things i experienced in the past, betrayed, etc was meal everyday to me. Less happiness lots of sadness etc. It is realy painfull when you try to make your friends etc happy but they almost never try to do the same to you. They did that sometimes only when they need my help, not really real want to cheer me up etc. I have been walking alone for years, but luckily there is still someone always be my side. even if the rainclouds is rarely disapear at least i'm still alive even if it is painful. Hope yall always be happy and have better fate

As someone who's gone through childhood trauma, instead of severe guilt, i try to isolate myself from anyone that gets to close to me, and small inconveniences make me either explode with anger, blaming it on my surroundings or crying uncontrollably. I'm still practically a child, as i'm a minor, altrough smallest of tasks always drain me out. I feel tired all the time. When i stand up, i feel dizzy and sit down again. I can't take living like this any longer. People are obviously aware of my problems yet to nothing, and it infuriates me. When i do actually go outside for a walk, i'm THAT scared of people to the point that i ACTUALLY hold my breath and try to keep myself together when i walk past them. Any eye contact makes me anxious

for most of my life I have been emotionally abused by a person in my life who is very special to me (not my mom or dad) I have always just dealt with the trauma because I thought it was normal but when another adult woman (my yw leader) witnessed her being mean to me she waited for me to leave the kitchen and talked to me about how she understood how difficult it can be to have to deal with that kind of person was when I started to think about how none of my friends grandmas were this mean and how they never complained about them, and they didn't relate to me about it. this was still very recent in my life and I feel like I would be considered crazy if I went to therapy for it and I haven't asked my parents to get it. what should I do?

Obviously everyone is going to be different in what they need to recover. For me it was taking a beating from a work injury involving both hips, upper legs, gluts, & lower back at the same time. Followed by a wake up call with the help of a stranger & finally facing one of my biggest demons of my life (I was emotionally detached for 8 years. After realizing that there is nothing wrong with me I looked into personally tests, & that's how I came across the MBTI. After taking a beating mentally & physically, I was able to discover that if correct I was part of a small portion of the world population. Simply finding others like me helped me feel like I'm not alone & I'm not weird, but I am rare.

My childhood traumas/ bad memories are nothing compared to others but I'm still going to say:
1) my family including my relatives bullied or made fun out of me throughout my childhood. They made fun of the way I talk & my personality of being always shy, weak. Sadly, my parents were also involved.
2) it's hurt to say but my own sister always body shamed me(my parents did too)
But what hurts more is that she criticized my long and skinny face by saying that it looks like a 'dried mango seed'.
Idk if it should be called trauma but now I became very quiet & barely speak in any family gatherings, thanks to my relatives.

Its a life long wound that never heals. I've never wanted life. I wish I hadn't been born. Life is shit and I hate my parents for their selfishness and neglect. Childhood Emotional Neglect is a wound you never recover from because it changes the very way your brain processes the world. I'm now 60 and have a loving wife after two failed marriages. But I still hate my parents and wish I hadn't been born.
The really sad thing this is played out again and again by new parents who just don't get the hurt they are causing their kids!

A friend and I spoke about trauma a few days ago and we both agreed that, to refrase a Dr. Seuss quote, Trama is trama no matter how big or small. And it can affect a person very little or very much. It depends on the person. So, people deal with their trauma differently. So, have to be put in boiling water to become a hardend egg. Others need to be left, like bread dough, so it can rest and rise. I am finding out that I am bread dough because of the past mixing/folding/kneeding/pounding, resting is what is best now.

Man, this truly hurts because as a kid growing up without both parents it really effected my perspective on what it means to be a man and an adult and it's prevented me from growing healthily as a person. My mom also had anger issues and still does very rarely, but back then it was awful and it really effected me on a psychological level. Also I felt neglected because she had to work and she couldn't be there as a mother on an emotional level as much as she should have been.

My Mum used to get drunk a lot, which scared me, and my sister, My dad could't really do anything to solve it, because he was gone for a month every 2 months. Somehow, coincidently my mum always got drunk when my dad was at work. They also got into big arguments over small things, which led to depression for me. Another thing is, my dad didn't really support my sister being LGBTQ, which also led to my sisters depression, because he constantly neglected her about it.

Thank you so much for this video. Im 13 years old and I grow up in an abusive household my mom constantly screams at me everyday she tells me she wishes she never had me & she always cusses at me. Ive done so many things and tried talking to her and she just gets mad when I confront her about it.
And I try my hardest not to care what she thinks and me & my sister are still recovering

So true in many ways. I certainly can relate. Even though I've gotten professional help, there are brief moments when I recall the trauma. Fortunately as I've gotten older and wiser, I've learned how not to let my past affect my present and future. In other words, I just do the best I can and keep moving forward.

I don't remember almost any of my childhood. lol. Granted, I have a terrible memory, but I think a good chunk of that is because my whole family was being emotionally abused/manipulated by my mom and didn't even realize until we were all much older. Wouldn't surprise me if that's why, at least.

This hits me hard. Went through a lot in my childhood years. Never learned to love properly or how to be love. As I get older I realized a lot of the pain I blocked out in my youth is catching up to me. Im 28 and it feels like something inside me is breaking more and more everyday. Just not sure what it is

I grew up in an orphanage for 8 years of my life. Experienced brain damage from trauma and abuse by the caregivers.
20 years later I still have issues and roadblocks with the trauma I experienced in the past.
Day by day, I do my best in life and fight on and never give up.

reply

I never realized I had some kind of trauma frommy childhood until a couple weeks ago. I still don't have it treated cuz my mom always just say that i should think about how she feels when she never thinks about the consequences of hitting and yelling at a 4 year old.

I had a traumatic childhood. My mother killed herself when I was 10 years old. I found her dead body. My father was physically and emotionally abusive. I was subjected to bullying in middle school and high school. Your video is helping me to see there is hoo
