The Insane American Plan to Invade Japan in 1945 In Vietnam, which returned to French colonial rule, 700 to 800 Japanese soldiers remained and weapons such as aircraft and tanks were left behind. Kwangai Army Junior High School was established in 1946 during the Vietnam Independence War. At some military schools, military education was conducted by former Japanese Army officers and non-commissioned officers. Some of the former Japanese soldiers who died in the Vietnam Independence War have been honored at the Martyr's Cemetery. Some Japanese soldiers who returned to Japan were later awarded a medal by Vietnam. In addition, we will continue to maintain friendly relations between the two countries by establishing organizations such as the Japan-Vietnam Trade Association and the Japan-Vietnam Friendship Association.

Actually, the US planners _planned_ for the kamikaze aircraft and boats for the invasion. The plan was to have the first wave be essentially one giant _decoy_ (literally stocked to the gills with AAA guns) to lure out the kamikazes and just turn it into a literal shooting gallery. It should be noted that the USN had been replacing (if the design allowed for it) their AAA armament for 40mm Bofors and the USN's 3-inch 50cal _automatic_ naval rifles while the USN's 6-inch gun arsenal was being replaced with the 6-inch automatics. Then there are the Des Moines that would be in the invasion force. which also had the 8-inch 55cal automatics (which can _be used against aircraft_ and had a fire rate of one round every six seconds. Not only that, the USAAF would have modified B-17s and B-29s as AWACS in overwatch positions, allowing for accurate tracking of kamikaze attacks.

That-s the crazy part bc I watched a documentary where they talked about how in 1945 the Japanese military and government was mandating that their citizens trained for an invasion of Japan they trained kids to blow themselves up in case they ever needed to they trained the elderly how to fight they trained everyone so not only would millions of Allied soldiers and Japanese soldiers would-ve died but millions of Japanese Civilians were going to sacrifice their lives to as well and that-s why dropping the Atomic bombs was a better option

I believe that despite the predicted death toll, the invasion would have been the right thing to do. The people who died in the atomic bombings were not enemy combatants, but ordinary Japanese citizens who were simply going about their lives. With the invasion, the US army would be fighting against actual enemy soldiers. Both legally and morally speaking, killing an enemy soldier is not the same as killing an unarmed civilian. Also, the massive death toll predictions were only the worst case scenario.

No doubt the Red would have attacked from gained territory in Mongolia as well. And as Stalin was a late belligerent, he wanted the invasion to happen since it would have taken months to get his forces to the east and after the invasion, he would have a sphere of influence in Japan. Needles to say another reason we dropped the two bombs and. Ring a speedy end was not only to avoid horrid casualties but also to stop Stalin from gaining anything in post war Japan and creating that sphere of influence.

FYI, -DOWNFALL- was the code name for the overall plan for the conquest of Japan. The first landing, on Kyushu, was called -OLYMPIC-, and the second, on Honshu, was known as -CORONET-. In addition, there would have been a number of smaller landings made on nearby small islands to secure them for use as artillery firebases in support of the main thrusts.

if operation ketsugo is a go i guess the one option allied force has is the calmness of the sea before the storm/tsunami, out of sudden the invasion force is pull back as quick as they came like a beach drained out of water before the tsunami wave arrive then when night fall the sun is coming down one by one on every city

If this happened, I might not exist. One of my great granddads was going to be a bomber crewman in the pacific theater. Then, the bombs were dropped and he went home with no combat. If this happened, he would-ve been in a bomber plane over Japan overseeing the attack. I hope he would-ve seen it through if this happened.

In 1945 my grandfather was on a ship, en route to invade Japan when they surrendered. He ended being part of the occupation force instead and spent 5 years there. (He also really liked Japan in the end, I suspect he would have liked it a lot less had the original plan come to pass)

The Allies caught Gernany completely by suprise they were ill prepared at Normandy. The Japanese wouldnt have that problem thats why esitimates of 500, 000 casulties were not far fetched. The two nukes that were dropped didnt cost a half a million lives.
reply

If isolated japanese still fighting years after the war ended and the final battle Including their wounded and civilians fighting to the last on the island we did take over is any indication they wouldn't have surrendered no matter what they were facing
reply

I think operation downfall would had been catastrophic in terms of blood and treasure. The war would had dragged on for at least a couple of years longer then it ended. But I'm glad it didn't materialise otherwise who knows what would had happened.

I thought the American plan (if atomic bombs weren't a thing) was to blockade the islands and try to starve them out? The Americans knew how costly an invasion would be, so surely they would only perform one as a last resort?
reply

Allied plan, it would have been multi national. You had the British Pacific Fleet on Japan's doorstep. Britain wrapping up the Japanese land army in Burma and focusing on Japan. Stop being a glory hogging yank.
reply

I don-t understand why any of this would have been necessary. After Germany was beaten they could have just blockaded the island until the Japanese ran out of everything including energy. Zero casualties.
reply

0: 35 FYI, China was part of the Allies as well. Actually it was the primary reason the US and Japan joined WW II, after the US oil embargo to protect China and Indochina threatened Japanese war efforts.
reply

Im just imagining a Japanese Dday where the Japanese fortify mountains, as the US rishes one mountain thr next one can bombard that fortress so you have dozens of fortresses bombarding and helping eachother.
reply

This video also left something out: there were plans to drop, in addition to Little Boy and Fat Man, SEVEN atomic bombs across strategic locations in Japan to further incapacitate the island nation.
