Explore the complex anatomy of the elbow, and find out why hitting your funny bone causes such an odd and painful sensation. -- It's something we've all experienced: the back of your elbow smacks against a hard surface and the impact sends a sensation so distinctly disquieting shooting down your arm that it takes several moments to regain composure. So, why does hitting this spot on your elbow commonly known as the funny bone feel so weird Cella Wright explains one of the most complicated joints in the body.

I had Ulnar nerve entrapment in both elbows. I had surgery to fix it but i've been screwed up since surgery. They had to move my nerves and I have literally been in constant pain the last 10 years. I'm disabled yet can't get the disabled designation. Doctors can't figure it out all. We have tried everything. Stuck waiting for new technology or new medications because they have no answers right now

When I was 12, I badly dislocated my elbow and fractured it in two places. It damaged my ulnar nerve. I had pins and needles on my fourth and fifth finger and all the way up my arm to my elbow. It eventually went away after 1. 5 years. But to this day (33 years later, my fourth and fifth finger are just a bit numb. And hitting my funny bone is really painful instead of merely uncomfortable.

Summary:
In most of your body your ulnar (pain) nerves are covered by muscles, skin, tissue, bone etc. But the funny bone’ area is (perhaps) the longest area in your body where that nerve is semi-unprotected. So with the right angle and force, it hits it directly and strikes a strange feeling. The exact reason is not understood yet.

If yall dont think funny bone hits are funny idk. I mean ok im usually not clumsy but sometimes that hit lands clean and ok it hurts a little but its some of the funniest pain one can endure.
The happening can be laughed at and when youre done laughing the sensation is gone and you can go about as usual. Until next time

Funny enough (pun not intended, when I hit my funny bone the pain and pins and needles make me laugh for some reason. Is this why they call it the funny bone in the first place Your brain doesn't know what to do with the jumble of signals it gets and to help cope with it all you laugh

One time I hit my elbow in math class, experienced this excruciating pain, felt nauseous and then temporarily lost sight for a solid 15 minutes. We called the paramedics and after a bottle of water and laying my feet up, my sight returned. To this day I dont know what happened.

Can confirm: constant bent elbows can make the fourth and fifth finger feel a bit numb. Got that from using my laptop keyboard incorrectly when learning how to play Terraria with mouse and keyboard when it first came out.
THAT WAS ALMOST TEN YEARS AGO

A spider bite combined with an accidental bump later led to a real issue for me a while back.
No pins and needles, but complete numbness in my pinky and ring fingers.
Thankfully with treatment I was cured, but it did take a while to fix.

I dont know if you have a video on this but whats the reason some body parts just go to sleep temporarily Like they become like steel, you cant control them for some time. this happens especially when you hold one position for a long time

I think I got my ulnar nerve entrapped for a bit. It felt similar to carpal tunnel syndrome, and my ring finger and pinky were numb for 2-3 weeks until the inflammation went down. Don't lean on your elbows too much lol

When I was a kid I found out which specific nerve triggered that feeling. I would pull on it and give myself a funny bone, eventually I couldn’t get them. It wasn’t funny anymore.

Hmm that's weird, I only thought about my funny bone just the others day. I don't think I looked up anything about that in any way, shape or form, how this this know to pop up today

I smacked my funny bone against some wood at work so hard my ring and pinky fingers went numb immediately. It was a terrible few minutes but I'm glad I'm educated on it now!

my first ever fracture happened to my elbow, right next to my funny bone. it was such a shock to my nervous system that the left side of my face went numb for a minute

I love how strictly analytical they are talking about a nerve signal in your brain and all that fancy language, while all my mind produces are some feces-covered obscenities.
