I am a pharmacist and agree with mostly what was stated in the video. If you have a cold best bet is to let it run its course, stay hydrated, get plenty of R&R, eat whole foods that are easy on the stomach/digestion. If you want to use some home remedies honey and warm beverage can help with cough and soar throat. Licorice tea has been shown to be slightly more effective than water but avoid if you have hypertension. Here are my recommendations for the 4 classes mention in the video:
All of these I recommend buying items with 1 active ingredient. The combo products are a bit of an overkill and you want to target specific symptoms.
1. Antitussive (suppressants) - Delsym (dextromethorphan) IMO the liquid form seems to work better than the tablets. AVOID dextromethorphan with guaifenesin. TONS of medications are on the shelves with both. It is a expectorant with a suppressant it makes no sense to take both. Take the suppressants when you need to stop coughing but if you cough is producing phlegm it is better to cough it out. Another option is Promethazine with Codiene which honestly works a million times better but since people have abused it pharmacies no longer carry it which is a shame.
2. Expectorants - The only really is guaifenesin but I suggest saving your money. Drinking water has the same affects of breaking down phlegm and it saves you $$ with no side effects. Again AVOID guaifenesin with dextromethorphan together.
3. Decongestant - pseudoephedrine is pretty much the only thing that works. However if one has any heart problems or high blood pressure it is recommended to NOT take pseudoephedrine due to the vasoconstriction it causes (tightens veins. There is phenylephrine for people with these heart conditions but it is much less effective and I would honestly rather save my $$$.
4. Antihistamine - The final class of antihistamine probably has the most options avaliable. For colds I would take the H-1 (the ones that cause drowsiness NOT the non-drowssy ones) These include Diphenhydramine, Cetirizine, Chlorpheniramine. The non-drowsy ones are better for allergies then treating the whole body for cold like symptoms.
Speak to your pharmacist or physician if you have any questions about them or are concerned.

I have some simple ways to alleviate the cold.
1. Before sleeping drink hot milk with turmeric and honey. Not only it will help you sleep well but also keep you warm. Boil turmeric in milk and then add honey.
2. If your nose is blocked then you can consider taking steam.
3. Rinse your itching throat with salt water.
4. Don't miss your two regular teeth brushing and especially clean your tongue.
5. If it's winter and rainy season drink warm water. And in summer avoid drinking too much cold water.
6. If it's winter then don't forget to dry your wet hair with hair dryer.
7. You can consider chewing on a small stick of Liquorice it's helpful for bad throat.

well what works for me. maybe i should tell. i always cure mine in a day when i do this.
those mucus that comes in nose. don't throw them away. ONLY WIPE THE ONES THAT ARE ABOUT TO FALL WITH CLOTH.
When i sneeze hard to blow the mucus away. The cold gets STRONGER and even LASTS sometimes MORE THAN A WEEK.
But when i don't try to sneeze and only remove those in surface layers with hand ( you can pich with hand to remove those near end of nose)
It ALWAYS ALMOST gets half cured next day. at third day it's gone. few days earlier i had also caught it. And the third day it was gone.
If i had gone around blowing nose, i don't know how long i would had to suffer.

Put a little bit of ginger (like the tip of your thumb) sliced and half a citrus pressed out into boiling water and let that tea sit for some ten to fifteen minutes. Sweeten with some honey.
The ginger fires up your metabolism, the citrus helps that plus adds vitamin C and the honey has an enzyme in it that starts producing hydrogen peroxide that has a disinfecting effect on your mouth and throat. You will feel an increase in body temperature from the ginger. That's also your immune system taking of the boxing gloves and going bare knuckles on the germs.
That's the best medicine I know.

dont you guys feel its kinda weird how many people are sick ive become really paranoid lately because i seem to catch a kinda cold but not really about every 2 weeks, my girlfriend too, about half the people at work, and at the very least for me it's been going on like thiss the past year already
right now i have a headache, really low energy, some digestive issues, dry eyes, when i breathe through my nose it feels like really cold or i dont know how to explain, also sneezing randomly throught the days for 3-4 times
really makes me wonder what's happening, i used to never get sick: /

I can shake off the cold/flu in 3 to 4 days with:
Curry vindaloo (very spicy and clears the nose) (When you feel that uncomfortable tickle in your throat that leads to flu, eating vindaloo might prevent the flu from coming, worked for me)
Spicy soup (Clears the nose)
hot British tea.
Cold towel on your head all night (very good and powerful treatment for me)
Lemsip (Lemony hot drink)
Vicks VapoRub (on chest)
Hot shower or bath is great, steam good for nose with a bath.
If I do not do all these it will last a week or 2.
Hope it helps, stay well.

0. 16. animation of ancient Egyptians using honey (with flies abuzzing etc) but voice-over says 'breastmilk'. my MIL knew a bit of ayurveda. she used breastmilk for minor eye ailments like conjunctivitis, or small boils on eyelids common during warmer months. King Tut's tomb had honey buried with him that was still edible & wholesome when the Egyptologists got to him. imagine eating thousand yr old food. no expiry date this honey.

Sorry but if I the best thing is to raw dawg my next cold I would rather just lay down and let the cold take me. Like cold medics, to me, treats the symptom of will to live because the first thing I lose when I’m sick is morale. Every time I’m sick I try to avoid medicines where possible but as soon as I can’t fall asleep from coughing or aches I fold so fast

My cold/flu regimen is paracetamol for headaches, honey for a sore throat, salt-water nasal spray to temporary unclog my nose, and ice cream both for cooling down a fever and just helping me feel better about life in general. There's no curing it, so best you can do is make yourself comfortable while the ride lasts.

My best friends are: ibuprofen and pseudophedrine when I'm light cold. And I go ahead with my work and daily life thanks to these two. Then some herbal teas and soups just to keep moisture on my throat and feel good.
If it gets more serious then, I go ahead for augmentine antibiotics.

I don't know if this will work for you, but TAKE ZINC. As soon as you believe you're catching a cold, take at least 70mg of zinc every 12 hours. and you might avoid the cold completely or reduce its duration to half the time. It works for me every single time for years. And rest, of course!

I have suffered from cold(runny nose and sneezing) for about 2 years now. Medicines just stop it for a day or two then the same process begins.
Some physicians say its allergy but they don't cure it or can't be cured. What am I supposed to do Stay away from cold my whole life

It's getting to be Head Cold season for me again, so this is helpful. :) Just took a benadryl allergy to help with some sinus swelling and other symptoms. Drinking loose leaf tea that contains nettle, peppermint, and some other stuff. Maybe it will help. lol

My most common practices for colds: rest, hydrate (with tea, inhale steam.
Paracetamol for headaches, throat lozenges or sugar free bonbons for throat pain.
Only once did I have to get codeine when my cough lasted for a month and caused chest pain.

I kept on getting antibiotics prescribed for cold since i was a kid. My digestion is pathetic and it is only a few years ago that I stopped consuming antibiotics for fever and im actually falling sick way less, my digestion has also been lil better

Just drink honey and lemon. I've noticed this medicines don't work or they work for a short while and then your back coughing and sneezing but with honey and lemon it burn your throat and kills whatever is there and 1 week later your good to go.

Did you guys not think that part of what prompted you to watch this video and then comment on it is the fact you have a cold No one is reading your mind and there's no weird coincidences. No one I know is sick at the moment for example
reply

A tip that some medical professionals are getting behind is to stop taking fever reducers until your fever goes above 102, because a fever between 99 and 102 is actually just doing its job: killing viruses by overheating them
reply

Not even once In all medical / scientific literature has a virus been isolated and shown to be the cause of any disease. Not once. Not ever. Prove me wrong and I will show you where MILLIONS of $$are waiting for you. Not kidding.
reply

How is there such a big devolution from ancient Egypt to many others ways used before today, how did we get from honey that may slightly help and is good for you in general to losing blood for no reason and poisoning ourselves
