jet rental can run from $7500 an hour for domestic flights to roughly $17000 for international flights
$40000 from LA to NY
$120000 from NY to London
Above costs before paying for the crew, fuel, landing fees to the airport, and federal tax.
Buying a jet runs from somewhere 2 million USD to 65 million USD
In addition to operational costs, jet owners should pay for a hangar and 1 milion USD for inspection and maintanence every year
Environmental Cost
commercial planes emitted 800 megatones of CO2 in 2022 and moved 853 million passengers
It is a bit less than 1 ton of CO2 per person per flight
On average, one person emits 4 tonnes of CO2 a year
Private jets emit 10 to 20 times more CO2 per passenger on average
In 2023, top jet fliers produced more CO2 than 6500 people combined

How can there be one ton of emissions per passenger A 737 burns maybe 3 tons of fuel per hour and holds 200 passengers. Assuming a long (8 hour) flight, that's 24 tons of fuel for 200 passengers. You'd have to burn over 200 tons of fuel to get 200 tons of emissions, since you can't make matter out of nothing. How do they go from 0. 12 tons per passenger to 1 ton per passenger Where are the remaining 0. 88 tons per passenger coming from Sure, you could argue things like food serve consume a bit of emissions, but that doesn't cost eight times the emissions burning the fuel does. I'm not saying that air travel doesn't make plenty of emissions, but it seems like some dodgy figures from TED here.

Honestly, I wouldn’t even recommend the book Vibrations of Manifestation by Alex Lane to everyone it’s one of those things that only really works for people who are naturally self-aware like Libras, Scorpios, and maybe a few evolved Geminis. The rest of y’all I’ve seen too many dive into it, get overwhelmed, and quit halfway because it actually forces you to look at your own energy patterns, not just repeat affirmations and hope. It’s deep. It’s not fluffy LOA TikTok content. If you’re not ready to shift your subconscious and face the stuff you’ve been avoiding, don’t even bother. But if you are well, you’ll know. You’ll feel it.

The problem with fuels from biomass is that it really doesn't scale well. There is just not enough bio waste mass to make fuel from. And if you have to create area by removing forests to grow crops to make them fuel, it's obviously not sustainable either. You could get the carbon directly from the air, but removing carbon dioxid is so energetically inefficient that, until we have powered the whole world by renewables, the energy would always be better used to put directly into the grid. Hydrogen might be a solution, but also has drawbacks. So reducing the emissions in flying in a really hard problem.

Burning SAF fuel also releases CO2 into the atmosphere, but growing crops pulls enough C02 from the atmosphere to offset those emissions by up to 86%
If entire jet fuel pipline shifted to SAFs, it could reduce aviation emissions by up to 94%
Limitations of SAF
Not enough to accommodate the demand
Small scale, which makes it super expensive
Role of Jet Owners
It would cost them extra few thousand of dollars to use synthetic SAFs
This boom would cause SAF development and large-scale production

Wouldn't synthetic SAFs defeat the whole purpose If the CO2 emission reduction from SAFs come from the crops pulling CO2 out of the air (see 3: 42, how does making those synthetically reduce emissions Presumably creating them instead of growing them would require energy (largely produced by fossil fuels) so there would be NO reduction in emissions from that. It sounds like the only way to use SAFs to reduce emission is to grow the product that goes into them.

I honestly thought, and I really thought they were gonna suggest alternative to airplane flight like say better trains or pushing legalization but no, instead they talking about a biomass fuels that requires cutting down a rainforest worth of resources just to fuel a year of flight for one plane. Sorry, did Taylor Swift's private jet company wrote this video
However while we can't convince celebrities and CEO to fly commercial
EXCUSE ME YES WE CAN!

I was talking to someone who flew private jets for an airline.
Most passengers were college kids going to away games. In college I could barely afford a bike lol.
Craziest story was a couple who chartered a jet to fly their dog on a four hour round trip flight to get it groomed in a different city. They didn’t even fly with the dog. Just sent a handler and puppy. At $7500 an hour that’s $30, 000 just to send your dog to the groomers.

Everyone is mad at Taylor Swift or Pitbull for their flights, but has anyone stopped to consider WHY they're flying so much To meet the demand of their followers. People in every city want to see them on stage and with how packed these shows are back to back, private jet is the fastest way for these stars to meet the demand. You're mad at the singers for using jets, but its the fans that are driving this usage.

Wait wait hold up, we can’t make billionaires and celebrities stop flying private jets! Of course we can!
Stop manning the flights, put astronomical taxation on private aviation, ticket unlicensed occupation of airspace, legally limit the market for selling and buying of jets and make them take the damn bus like the rest of the world!
Rich people aren’t gods or superheroes, they just as much people

The biggest hypocrites are the attendees of environmental COP meetings. At every COP, delegates from all countries fly in private jets, contributing to carbon to massive emission only to talk about emission cuts and climate action. In today’s world of high-speed internet and advanced communication technologies, why such meetings can't simply be held online! GLASGOW COP produced 1000 ton CO2 emisson.

I'm really disappointed in this TED-Ed video for essentially trying to rationalize away the enormous environmental costs of private flying. SAF's are just another form of greenwashing and won't accomplish what really needs to happen -- limiting/banning these outrageously costly flights. That 1% are responsible for 50% of emissions is selfish, irresponsible, and unconscionable.

Actually you can convince them to do so by placing a astronomically high tax on luxury purchases like jet planes or yachts at 80% of the jet value per month, this would essentially make hoarding these sorts of things very very expensive and if they even wanna buy a private jet, it should have an employee vote of a supermajority of 99% just to be in CONSIDERATION to buy.

Personally, I think that developing electric airline engines powered by renewable energy sources are better alternative to sustainable aviation fuels. Or, even better, I think we should work on building up our mass transit system; trains, local and long range buses, etc, also powered by renewable energy. Regardless, we're gonna have to figure this out one way or another.

It's the average guys from 99% (pilot, air hostess, mechanics, air traffic controllers) who make a private jet flight possible for top 1%
Can the 99% force governments and corporations to ban private jets for top 1% Nope coz
Corporates have profit in mind NOT WELFARE
Governments have corruption NOT INTENTION
People have kids NOT TIME
That is why we are doomed

rougly 1% of fliers have been responsible for almost half of aviation emissions
Viable Solution
swapping existing jet fuel for sustainable Aviation Fuels
Jet fuel is made of fossil fuesls, which when burned, release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere
SAF - made from waste materials like used cooking oil and renewable crops like corn and algae

The biggest private owner of a fleet is Walmart. They made the math of the running cost of their jets and comercial flights for their executives and such, and its cheaper to fly them privately than having the executives flying commercial because of their high salaries, since its way faster to move them around the country with absolute flexibility.

Of course, most of the world's population don't fly at all, so even people flying on commercial jets are putting out massively more CO2 than the global average. And the people who don't fly usually live in places that are more vulnerable to the effects of the climate crisis. No matter how you fly, you are a rich person killing poor people.

I fly private out of necessity. I help run multiple businesses that wouldn’t stay afloat without me being able to travel fast. Sometimes visiting 3 or 4 locations in a day that would take me a week flying commercial. Is it bad for the environment Yes. Did I create jobs 2000 people and make the world a better place Yes.

Somebody should have done their homework before making this video. Did you throw numbers in a hat to decide what things cost In some cases it is cheaper for me to fly privately than on a commercial flight when you factor time and all related costs. This video is promoting a biased narrative not based on reality.
