Take a look at the US supply chain to explore the three main reasons why medications like insulin are so expensive. -- A century after its discovery, insulin remain essential in treating diabetes, and has a relatively low production cost, with a vial generally costing less than $6 to make. But those in the US pay on average 10 times more than those in other countries leading some patients to take less than prescribed. Kiah Williams takes a look at the US supply chain to explore why medications are so expensive.

While capitalism can be considered a thing that fuels innovation, end-stage capitalism is opposite, it uninvents working things through planned-obsolence, inflicts suffering and disease through poor nutrition and ignoring the need for improving peoples palate instead of essentially poisoning people with stuff that is detrimental to their health, robs people blind by opportunistic profiteering despite the increasing wage gaps, pushes people away for increased profits in favor of automation and perceived growth of economy instead of the livable conditions for the average/low-end member of said economy. While capitalism originally brings together people to an idea of equal opportunity and fairness of living to everyone, it spoils down through greed and excessive need for constant growth and rejection of any other values except the money they provide to the investors that it ends up to just essentially a competition to make yourself indisposable and competition on who can rob more from the others. Eventually this all will turn belly-up as the regular users, and low-level users of these services abandon the companies, products and start even actively ignoring the ruleset that didnt protect their wellbeing anyways and rob what they need and eventually cause the whole societal structure to unravel, this is very close to happening as disbelief and mistrust to whole western capitalistic society is so low that we already see mass-looting/surge of crimerates, society-wide self-sedation, increased fatalism/hopelessness, political corruption running rampant and taking it as granted. if this system falls, so fall all our democratic values and years of struggle to not be in a hellscape that is feodalism or similar things, though it's already rather far in the process as the populistic political leaders seem to lack any true perception/connection to their system and instead just dont either realize how in history this has already been resolved multiple times, we need to fix it before its too late.

US needs an open market for generic medications. The fact that insulin, discovered 100 years ago and without patent, can be subjected to price changes like those described in this video is only possible because there is an oligopoly with limited companies supplying the goods. The fact that these three companies agree on increasing and reducing the prices as they want, is a sign that this is not an open market. Insulin should be widely available at low prices. same as you can get aspirin and acetaminophen.

I can’t talk for other pharma companies, but the one I work for has a good reason for its price of plasma based medicines. It costs so much from my own point of view of taking the separated plasma and then refining it down to a usable form with all the water, energy, and specific materials used to make 240L per batch. That doesn’t include the donation workers, the area that separates the plasma, the sterile filling areas, or the shipping costs. Almost makes sense why it’s $60, 000 a Liter

Madness. Thanks to these industrial moves, here in Brazil we live in a dilemma, with the devaluation of our currency, the import of medicine to save 1 life costs the equivalent of the lives of 100 other families, thanks to the exorbitant prices. The dilemma is that sometimes, the government fails to feed 100 families, in favor of 1 baby with bone disease

Here in Brazil, it’s free, and not just insulin. Numerous medications for hypertension, asthma, osteoporosis, contraceptives, and a variety of other diseases are also free. In addition, medical care, surgeries, physical therapy, hospitalizations, etcall are free for both Brazilian citizens and foreigners. All of this is protected by our Constitution!

US is regarded as one of the top countries that values democracy the most, then why can't citizens say to politicians enough is enough, if you are not going to do something to reduce medicine price then you are not going to get their vote. In a thrid world country that may not have any impact but this is US!

Of course, the US leads the way. How can the pharmaceutical board members and investors afford their yachts and private jets without high medication prices I mean, yachts and private jets are more important and should be prioritized than the lives of the lower and middle classes, right

Why can't more people be more like Frederick Banting, focusing more on the people's well-being over profits So many people are suffering all because of the selfish monetary gain of these companies. Not to mention all those sugary and ultra-processed foods running rampant in their diets.
reply

Prices are high not because big pharma thinks folks will pay it but the government is forced to through medicare, etc. So, when Biden started regulating the price of insulin, etc, it'll stick because no way will people be able to pay for it on their own.
reply

You Americans need to realize the power you have as people. Get mad or this price gouging for critical treatments will keep happening. Get that universal healthcare because the people hold the power, the gov only borrows it.
reply

We could also stand to remove certain regulations, like import restrictions that lessen competition. If insulin (of equivalent quality) is being sold in Canada/Europe/etc. for 1/10th the price, it's illegal to import it.

America loves to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on the biggest military on the planet but can’t be bothered to provide healthcare even for the poorest of its citizens. Strange priorities.

Its so sad how company’s ALWAYS go for the money route cus sadly, thats just how it works, you cant intentionally make less profit as other company’s will just take your place anyways.
reply

99% of all suffering caused in this world is because of greedy people like slavery did it literally just because they didn't want to pay people to do the work also obviously racism as well
reply

Here in the USA, Big Pharma bribes politicians, mostly Republicans, to stop legislative controls on price gouging. Most Americans like me want a healthcare system like that of Denmark.
reply

they didn't reduce the price of insulin of their own generosity in 2023. The Biden admin worked with manufacturers to get the price reduced. You did not mention that.
reply

The taxes are being used to pay for Israelis' universal healthcare, while millions of Americans are struggling to pay for their medical expenses
reply

Almost all countries know that affordable healthcare is essential for every person. I just can't understand why the USA is not one of them
reply

Because your tax money are paid to fund wars. but ironically every war US has declared is none impacting US citizen's livelihood.
