Dig into the history of the Armenian Genocide, during which the Ottoman Empire killed over 1 million Armenians during WWI. -- When an Armenian resistance movement began to form in the 19th century, Sultan Abdul Hamid II took decisive action. He led the Hamidian Massacres a relentless campaign of violence that killed over 150, 000 Armenians. These massacres were the culmination of centuries of oppression, yet they were only the beginning of an even greater tragedy. Ümit Kurt uncovers the history of the Armenian Genocide.

This is unfortunately a propagandized video. History is written by the empowering governments which in this case was helping Armaniens to build Armania for increasing the inner conflicts is Ottoman Empire and to divide it among the central powers. There was no actual plans in fact of massacre. No evidence. No orders to kill the armanians. To be frank, they were creating internal conflicts but they alone weren't antagonized as a big threat. So there wasn't any racial or religious conflict between turks ( as they put it) and armenian people. It was merely political and influenced by nationalism as in that period the Ottoman Empire was about to croll. The colonizers eyes were upon the Empire for at least a hundred years by then and with the rise of nationalsim after the french revolution Serbia, Greace and the Balkan countries were formed each of them seperated from Ottoman's domain. The problem wasn't that the Ottoman Empire were maltreating the people with different nationality. In fact they were trying not to break the empire down by giving them eccesive rights. The problem was that the empire was about to end and peoples of every nationality wanted a peace of it because they were living there too and why not when youre supported by the big European countries. Lets return to our main topic. So there was this policy called iskan policy which is basicly a two sided immigration policy call it a switching populations if youre inclined. The problem was that when ottoman empire enforced this policy to resolve the conflict, the armenian people needed to take on a long journey with their precious possessings in to the preferial lands of the empire while the places that they were about to pass were filled with starving and poor ottoman citizens effected by the governments poor treatment of them also. There were many thiefs and to get ahold of the armenian riches they killed them on the road. This is the armenian genocide. But a genocide by its meaning must be an organized act by the government which it was clearly not. Also the armenian president Pasinyan stated that there wasn't a genocide but as it always happens the armenians which dont live in Armania hold on to their grudges forming negative ideas in confront of the turkish nation and people not even the ottoman government and the hate still goes on as the European countries were always on their side supporting them. Thank you for your read. Hope you got some new perspectives about that peroid of the history.

A video full of lies and ignorance from beginning to end. First, the British accepted that there was no genocide in 1915. Later, in 2005, Turkey sent an invitation letter to Armenia about the examination of the archives of the two countries by independent, international historians, but the Armenian State rejected this invitation. The reason for these unfounded claims by Armenia is to receive war reparations and to leave Turkey alone in the international arena and put it in a difficult situation. During the dates in question, the Turkish side did not relocate or resettle anyone without cause. During World War I, all kinds of ethnic and minority groups that cooperated with other states against the Ottoman Empire and betrayed it and burned fields, villages, cities, historical and cultural structures and started riots were relocated outside the hot war zone. This relocation and resettlement is considered as the self-defense of the state. All kinds of humanitarian measures were taken by the Turkish Government during the relocation and resettlement (e. g. mobile hospitals and food distribution points, but due to the harsh war and winter conditions of the period, epidemics, etc. Unfortunately, there were Armenian brothers who lost their lives for various reasons. However, the number of Turks massacred by Armenians is not small either. Stop looking at historical and political events from a one-sided perspective and see the truth.

As an Armenian who is quite versed in the topic, I can say that Ted-Ed not only didn't even scratch the surface of the issue, but completely missed the mark on which events were of key importance, as well as, wildly softened the events that happened, gave incorrect/unchecked info and shortened the timeline. It's sad that westerners don't even check up the extensive sources of western journalists who reported during the Armenian genocide.
P. S. the genocide is still ongoing, in 2023 another 150. 000 Armenians were deported by Azeri/Turkish coalition from Artsakh, and well the west doesn't care, just like they don't care about the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
P. P. S. I don't know why am I even surprised, the episode is written by a Turkish Kurd author, PhD and all.
Well still, at least thanks for covering the topic!

unfortunate video for ted. the way you showed the whole situation is totally wrong actually. first of all the second class citizen isn't accurate. generally non-muslims were the wealthiest people in ottoman empire therefore they were privileged than the turkish population it is true that they were judged by different law but that was because muslims were judged by the kuran aka sharia.
another point that is not sitting right is that your display of the situation during ww1. ottoman armenians actually did want their own territory and they did showed violence towards the turkish for this cause. there are wide range of evidence for those who wondering. and i know that by first hand as whose father's side is from sivas like 3 generations. archives are open, get a grip.

Greeks, Armenians and Assyrians. But only Armenians are recognised. 6 September of 1955 in Constantinople. They even brought people from further Anatolia to come to the city and destroy Greek businesses. That was during the Republic when they signed a law that they'd protect them in 1923. Amele Taburu another example. Death concentration camps for all non-muslims. Or another one in Smyrna, where the Greek led city, (hence why they called it infidel/Gavur Ismir) had 300. 000 when Athens at that time had 120. 000. Greece momentarily got the city back but because it's not recognised now, they narrative is that they burned before they left because they always wanted to leave and be with people they didn't know in a land they never step their foot on.

This all is a complete lie. In the Ottoman empire Armenians were in the best positions throughout history. Most often they had the title Pasha
As for genocide, during this genocide more Turkish people died than armenians. The Turkish people fought with the Armenians who killed civilians. Why don't you create a video about the genocide committed by the armenians against the Turkic Muslim population in Khojaly. There is enough information about this crime on the internet. Armenians killed innocent children, women and old people that night . That terrible crime was not only against Muslims. That was against humanity in the world.
And thank armenian lobby for this Ted Talks video about the armenian genocide

I like how people excuse this genocide for many reasons. The genocide WAS, and it's proven and recognized by:
- International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS): Recognized the genocide and supported its acknowledgment globally.
- Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention: Actively promotes recognition and documentation of the Armenian Genocide.
- European Parliament (1987): Acknowledged the genocide through a resolution.
- Council of Europe: Supported the recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
- UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities (1985): Classified the mass killings as genocide in a broader study on crimes against humanity.

There is not only Armenian genocide but also Kochgiri and Dersim genocide commited by ottoman turks and young turks which later become founder of turkey. This is how turks brain works. After 1915, 1921, 1937 and 1938 also crime years of genocide against non-sunni kurds. Hundreds of thousands were killed systemically by the government arms just because they are not turks and they are not sunni. Ottoman rulers and young Turkey Republic they both motivated by same instinct to kill. Turkey has a significant criminal record abusing human rights against their non-turk and non-sunni people.

Armenian people were never seen and treated as second class people in the Ottoman Empire. Because it was ruled by Sharia whic doesn’t includes class discrimination like western laws. There were only 2 groups: Muslim people and non Muslim people. In these groups, people were jugded in court by their own religion’s rules. Yes, they payed tax more than muslims because according to Sharia it is forbidden to serve in the military as an non muslim person. That’s why they payed more. But they always serve in the court and parliament. Most of the Ottoman politicians were Armenian.

The most important thing all these genocide deniers too blind to learn is that punishment for the atrocities committed prevents others to carry out the same crimes in other communities. Take for example, what’s happening in Palestine. If the genocide was internationally punished through sanctions, prohibitions, other measure, surely no country would be benefiting from the economic collapse of such consequences. But honestly, the world like that is hard to imagine even.
reply

I cant believe how such a liar video that tedx made. It's totally subjektive and far away from the historical realities. Why Armenians refuse when Turkish historians offer to check and analyze the archives Because they are afraid of the revealing of their lies and the propaganda of this so called genocide. Why no one is talking about the Turkish and Kurdish people that are killed by Armenian groups Because they think that they are the only opfers themselves.
reply

This one-sided video makes me question the credibility of the previous videos.
To those watching this video, I simply suggest looking into this: While all Ottoman archives are open to the public, why are the Armenian archives closed How objective can historical research be under these circumstances The Turkish side allows examination of all archives, yet the Armenian side restricts access to their archives, thus hindering research.

reply

They were not doing military duty, therefore this reflected their taxes. Also they were traders and making more money.
Just a side note: The Armenian gangs started killing the Ottoman citizens first.
You may want to mention about a bank heist done by them.
After all of these, I don't support Armenians misplacement and I am sad for anything that happened on their route. They should have stayed in Anatolia.

reply

I think it’s a completely biased and propaganda-driven video by Armenian lobby. I find it questionable to make a video with based on a source like Wikipedia, where anyone can write their opinions without real expertise, and opposing views are censored, especially on topics like this.
reply

Far from historical facts. The diaspora's strategy is the bigger the lie, the more people believe it. I suggest they fight for their rights in court. This is useless way to get someting. All worsen to poor Armenians living in Armenia, whereas everyone outside is enjoying their comfortable life.
reply

this is propaganda
If you say that, rhwn Palestinian massacre is also propaganda.
The comments remind me of Christians and Jews commenting against Palestine, saying how about Sudan genocide, Iran, Malaysia. This how about ism ia eroding our humanity. I'm not surprised

reply

Turks say genocide didn’t happen. I read comments by Turks. If this much hatred in comments alone, Armenian Genocide must have been even worse than this video says. Thanks Turks for helping me make up my mind that you are guilty just by your horrid comments. Peace to Armenia.
reply

For all the commenters discussing Palestine, the Armenian genocide is not just a past issue. Its toxicity seeped into the present and 120, 000 additional Armenians were ethnically cleansed in 2023, and Turkey and Azerbaijan had people chanting in 2020 to make 2020 1915 again.

Hope this series will cover the infamous and largely man-made Bengal famine of 1943 in British India during World War II.
I agree, such media hardly discuss about the brutality of the British and Americans. I'm not mentioning the religion as it's not relevant here.

reply

I don't know if it was already covered or not but they should make a video about the nanking massacre and how the certain communist government failed to properly seek justice for the victims of the genocide who are still suffering or who never saw justice.
