2: 05 That is actually not the reason heat is generated, and is in fact completely incorrect.
The real reason processors generate heat is because the gates of the field-effect transistors act like capacitors, and when their state is changing (from high to low or vice versa) the capacitor has to be discharged, which is a current and therefore generates heat. Otherwise, all MOSFET chips work on exclusively voltage levels, there is no analog circuitry that draws current.
This is the same reason why using smaller transistors generates less heat (smaller gates means less electrons needed to generate a field to enable the transistor, so less current i. e. less heat) and also why the heat generated is directly proportional to the frequency of the processor (higher clocks means more operations per second, so the capacitors need to be charged and discharged more often, generating more heat.
The heat generated has absolutely nothing to do with the size of the copper wires. And also, using smaller and more advanced semiconductor nodes like EUV will actually decrease heat generated by the processors. The reason heat is increasing is because of two things: there are more transistors on a die (more cores, more instructions, etc, and clock speeds are increasing (3GHz was normal in 2010, now it's 5GHz)
I can't believe the writers got this very basic thing wrong.

moore's law was never a law. It was a self-fulfilling prophecy. A taget the companies could use to estimate the competition.
For pc's moore's law have been dead for more than 10 years now. The nice thing is that a good pc will last you much longer now.
The bad thing is that software that was build with the expectation of morre's law still runs very slow on a moden PC.
In recent years we have seen more and more accelerators, specialized hardware that can run specific algorithms very fast and efficient. A good example of this has been video encoding. Codecs like H. 264, VP9, AV1 etc. that are used to playback (decode) videos like this one can run extremely fast on dedicated hardware, but it takes up some space on the chip, thus it can only be used for algorithms what a used very often. Cause when you are not decoding video this part of the chip is doing nothing.
(We are beginning to see the same thing for AI algorithms)

Tbh for general purpose daily use, I'd say we've arrived. A modern computer can load a website in very little time, show text input and video in near-real time, etc. Modern computers fail at this not because of computing power but because of artificial hindrances like third-party data harvesting or shadow rendering in Windows Explorer. So for a standard office worker, banning tracking pixels and incentivizing websites OSes to minimize their energy usage would be sufficient IMO.
There are specialist uses like video games where the case is more complex, but I honestly don't think there's a good reason for, say, my parents' computers to be replaced within the next 10 years.

i would imagine if tomorrow they said its no longer possible to make chips smaller or denser, we could probably get a lot of mileage just from making our software more efficient. how long has it been now where companies just dont bother trying to optimise anything because they know that most people have newer hardware or will upgrade at some point, so they dont really need to bother trying to make things run more efficiently. so much software has telemetry these days or will download new ads every few hours even if you dont have the app open. all of that is just pointless computation that is going on in the background for no good reason

We are nowhere near the limit of computing power. We haven't even come close to the power that the human brain is capable of. However the physical, economical, environmental and just sensible limits of current computing, yes I believe we are towards the upper echelons of that limit. We stack multiple proccessors together but that only makes such a difference and only so much sense real world. We evenentually will need a ground up fundamentally new way of processing to keep moving foward. Now, we as a society love fixating on and being dependent on what works and sells, so that will be a long ways off if it comes.

As an electrical engineering undergraduate, I really fall in love with the involved intricacies of the semiconductor industry development. When I learned what ASML and TSMC are doing back in college, they being in the very frontier of this industry, I know that I want to be part of it. It also helps me to really appreciate daily things we take for granted now like smartphone that I used to write this comment, knowing that the internals of it are the results of the collective efforts and sweat & tears of many current and past engineers and scientists who dedicated themselves to this field

Blame Windows 11 its going to create so much Ewaste, most people who have lets say a core2quad and 8gb of ram will be forced to upgrade, when it more than capable of running basic everyday things sure not snappy like modern hardware but with an SSD and an updated GPU, keep your system and these people wont have the knowledge to switch to linux for the same tasks and software ppl will have to account for these people so companies don't have an incentive to keep old hardware alive, Moores Law could be extended if old hardware was allowed to live longer

so thats why nvidia 5000 series wasnt that great, instead of making much stronger performance gpus, they only introduced AI and dlss gimmicks, and just a little gpu hardware performance, sure it's better than 4090, but not as great as 1080 to 2080, or 2080 to 3090 transitions. i wonder how 6000s would be if it still using those AI gimmick, then sadly we are on the line of limit, its going to be so hard for humans to create new innovative things, limited by our thoughts and earth capabilities (resources.

i know this is kinda off-topic, but i kept seeing comments about Magnetic Aura by Takeshi Mizuki in videos like this, and i finally decided to read it. honestly, it’s one of those books where you don’t realize how much it’s helping until you start noticing people treating you differently. it’s like the book shows you how to unlock a version of yourself you didn’t even know was there. subtle, but so effective.
