Jeepers Cripes, are you trying to demoralize us even more than many people already are! NO ONE is gonna do ANYTHING now, 'cause you & other people keep saying that it's not worth it, that we should just give up, that we dhould just lie down & take it, & that America has already fallen WITHOUT any chance of saving it! Forget you & your demoralizing! YOU'RE NOT HELPING!

So if we release genetically modified big head ants that are more resilient but have only so many generations before they turn infertile we could decimate the big head ant population in three years This gene drive with extra steps method would be contingency for either grey squirrel replacement or integration poisoning the species from within.

This is why, on the opposite end of the spectrum, rewilding projects, that is reintroducing native species that have been locally extinct, can have such incredible and positive ripple effects in the ecosystem. Small changes can have big consequences; good or bad.

Yes! I think I can solve that savanna mystery for you!
It's because of the introduction of an invasive ant species that destabilized the ecosystem.
But I'd suggest you watch the excellent video TED-Ed just put out on it. They explain it better.

the smallest/lowest/greatest #, members of the food
are always going to have the biggest effects
solution is probably developing a virus that targets big head ants
dangerous though, because there are ALWAYS unforeseen consequences

Wow, the savanna holds so many secrets! The way every clue connectsplants, animals, and even the climatefeels like solving nature’s biggest puzzle. This really shows how everything in an ecosystem is linked together. Loved the mystery vibe!

Invasive species have for many decades posed an enormous threat to many ecosystems around the globe. I hope a way to get rid of these big headed ants is developed. Maybe sothing similar to what's being done to invasive mosquitos in Hawaii

Ppl complaining about the video not being riddles, getting tons of likes while the content of the video itself isn’t being discussed enough
we don’t care about human-induced ecosystem collapse, we want our riddles! lol

Really interesting and insightful video. Great job by the scientist who figured out the detective work. I wonder if the lions suffered higher injury rates or death rates due to hunting the Buffalo instead of the zebra.

islands that are separated from Pangea for millions of years have differently evolved animals and plants. like Australia or Madagascar. which is why you see more heavily guarded biosecurities in their airports.

an ecosystem long stabilized
Maybe. We don't really know how long the last equilibrium has been around for. And we also don't know if the new system will find an equilibrium quickly or not.

Just a small correction, there are no water buffalo (bubalus bubalis) in Kenya. The correct species is the African buffalo, more specifically a subspecies called syncerus caffer which resides in Kenya.

Something like that happened on Yellowstone park, the wolves were decreasin then the eagles did, because no wolves meant too many deers eatin young trees that grow and make nest for eagles

I hate how they call that invasive. It's a species that's thriving and expanding its range, just like it's supposed to do. The rest have to adapt, which is totally Darwin.

Interesting. These ants are in my backyard, it is native in Malaysia and called Kerengga here. We need to smoke them out as they usually make nests with leaves on fruit trees

0: 30 Bigheaded I had and they are tiny and have 1-3000 members per queen. And they are tiny. Few mm big. But aggressive.
Though 100% harmless to humans. Cant pierce skin

This shows why ants are such good role models. They set out to complete a certain task, and they accomplish it with excellence. They are very intelligent creatures.
