Explore the construction of the futurist city Chandigarh, a project of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and planned by Le Corbusier. In 1947, India achieved independence from British rule but this freedom came at a tremendous cost. Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, was eager to usher his country towards a brighter, united future. And one of the projects that would prove most essential to realizing this vision was the construction of Chandigarh. Vikramditya Praksh details the creation of the futurist city.

I recently visited Chandigarh for an educational conference. I must say I was entranced by the greenery and efficient traffic control in the city. However, I also found city too. orderly. I know it sounds weird but a city needs a degree of chaos in it to be vibrant. The minute planning of Chandigarh has made it like a honeycomb, beautiful but repetitive. A city should be like a nest, neat enough to meet the citizens need and a little rough to feel the vibrancy.

Just from an initial watch, this reminds me of the failing mega projects that Egypt keeps announcing. Maybe they can follow Chandigarh’s example. Cities (like Brasilia) have been built from scratch before, and hopefully we can see the model of Chandigarh replicated elsewhere in India and the world, especially in bigger urban centers.

Amazing narration and animation! However, It's really appalling to see the present neo-fascist government in India time and again trying to defame and nullify the extraordinary contribution of Mr. Nehru for the country. A genius man.

Never expected my home city to be featured in a TED video! I often discuss with my friends how well planned Chandigarh and everybody is affirmative about it’s well planned Sectors, Grid system etc.

The perfect city and state here in the USA would be one which bans Don the Con Trump from being on the 2024 ballot for his violating the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution on January 6, 2021.

My roommate was a Chandigarh guy. He told me that all the road in the state comes under state highway. I mean there is no other class of road system lower than state highway allowed

Even if it may not be perfect, it's definitely up there amongst the best in India. All thanks to some visionary folks!

Whether you are here to stay or passing through on your way to parts unknown, welcome to Sector 17. It's safer here.
