Long ago, there was a nymph named Echo, who was a favored servant of Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt. Echo loved to talk to anyone and everyone, and often Zeus would use her to distract his wife Hera so he could sneak down from Mt. Olympus and entertain himself with the women of Earth. Eventually Hera realized what was happening, and in her anger she cursed Echo so that the nymph could no longer speak any words of her own. Morose at her loss, Echo wandered the lands, only able to repeat what others had said. One day on her travels, she encountered a young man who was very beautiful to behold. She longed to tell him how she felt, but unless he spoke to her first, she could only follow him in silence. Eventually the man heard the sound of her footsteps, and he called out, 'Who's there? ' Echo repeated his words, and again he tried, 'Why do you run from me? ', but again she could only repeat what he had said. One more time he spoke, 'Let us meet here together. ' Overjoyed at his invitation, Echo leapt from the woods to embrace him, but as soon as he saw whom he had been talking to, the young man rejected her. Never would she have him or his love, he said before running away. The heartbroken nymph was again alone, and as she grieved she withered away, until eventually all that was left was her voice. Artemis was furious at the callousness with which the young man had treated the nymph, and so she cursed him that he might know the same pain he had so casually inflicted. The young man soon came upon a still pool, and as he bent down to take a drink, he gazed upon a handsome man. He reached out to his newfound love, but no matter how he tried, he could not manage to touch him. His mind cleared then, and he realized that he had fallen deeply, irrevocably in love with his own reflection in the water. With a cry of anguish, the young man pulled out his knife and stabbed himself in the heart, and he bled out as he looked at himself. Where his blood touched the shore, flowers sprang up, flowers that even today share that young man's name. Narcissus.

I asked my wife for some space. She took a bunch of clonopin in front of me. I brought her to the hospital, where she told everyone in her physical and emotional radius that I was abusive, cheating. etc. (untrue. Her parents and close friends all turned on me instantly. These people were my family until this moment. These friends were my friends. She recruited them for the splitting process. When she got out of the mental hospital a week or so later, she came right back and immediately threatened to commit suicide (this was common. I explained that I thought she might need more care. Then she left and went to live with her parents (supposedly) and proceeded to bait me over text, trying to get me to say things that she could construe as incriminating. It was outrageous, and I felt betrayed and abandoned. I realized at some point that she was just using everything I said against me, not just in that conversation, but everything I'd EVER said. I began to make my responses as pointed as possible so as not to incur liability for her to twist and weaponize my words. She ghosted me. It hurt for months and months, but I'm starting to realize that despite the damage she did to my reputation, I have escaped a bad situation.

Every one acting like their parents and ex's are narcissists. First thing, just because they think they are better than you, doesn't mean they think they are better than everyone. And in the case of parents, its very likely that they have a lifetime of experience that does in fact make them better than you in every measurable way.
It's just crazy the irony in the comments here with things like they thought they were so much better than me, not realizing it was I who was so much better than them.

I seem to have developed some of these traits, it's not good. I'm sure I dont have the disorder. If I did I wouldn't even question it.
I take responsibility for poor choices of words and bad decisions.
But I can't be blamed for people I had no interaction on the topic with putting 2 and 2 together and making 1598. They made up that story I didn't say that

While apparently almost all successful business people, high ranking corporate executives and company CEOs are narcissists so apparently narcissism is one of the most common traits in capitalist individuals but you still occasionally get the non narcissistic and generous ones here and there in the field! :)

it took me a major breakdown (15 months) to come out of my narcissism. after that I had a much more 'real' perception of who i really was. It was like finding the real me for the first time. The breakdown was a breakthrough.

The first step of narcissism is recognizing it. To everyone commenting that all narcissists are jerks, I'm working on my social skills. At our core, we have bad anxiety and crippling self-doubt.
