Lamarck is not right. This is not inheritance of acquired characteristics. This is the influence of chemicals on potential characteristics that are already there. Tags turning genes on or off is not like a giraffe stretching its neck so its offspring have longer necks. The genetic potential is there first. Genes are influenced by the environment and the chemical tags to deliver the final phenotype.

Is it by random chance or a process we are still discovering that we can pass on epigenetic traits? Could these traits actually be symptoms associated with trauma? I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how PTSD can become heritable.

It actually makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint. A species has a much greater chance of survival if its offspring can be influenced by the life experiences of its parents rather than just genes alone.

It seems like it's not adding new genes but merely making you more or less of what you already were. Modifying what genes are read/not read what is already in your DNA.
