Dig into the science of what causes snoring, and how chronic snoring can be a sign of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. A leather mask that clamps the mouth shut. A cannonball sewn into a soldier s uniform. A machine that delivers sudden electrical pulses. These were all treatments for a problem that has haunted humanity for millennia: snoring. It might seem harmless, but snoring can be a sign of something more dangerous. So, what exactly causes snoring? Alayna Vaughan digs into the troublesome sleep disorder

I have sleep apnea, sleep study showed I stopped breathing 21 times per hour. Used CPAP for a year. Then went to ENT doctor. He did an in office procedure called turbinate reduction my turbinates in my nasal were swollen forcing me to breathe through my mouth. I did another sleep study and now it shows sleep apnea is gone. I actually tape my mouth shut before bed with a soft medical grade tape. Best sleep ever. No snoring no apnea. Just Google mouth taping and look at the benefits.

Underdeveloped jaws from mouth breathing and incorrect oral posture forces less room for the tongue - forcing the tongue in the airway creating snoring. Your tongue should always be on the roof of the mouth when possible and your lips should be closed at night with this posture. Reference - orthotropics, mewing, and lot of good dentists and people I've seen.

i read that it was useful for keeping animals away from our caves. is this true? i mean announcing that there are humans in this cave might increase the survivability of them, since no animal inherently wants to fight humans if they can avoid it, but i'm curious if this is a scientific fact!

I had sleep apnea when I was overweight. I once slept in class (I was apparently snoring so loudly, everyone laughed at me, I woke awake in panic. Only to be sent to the clinic, then they assumed I have sleep apnea. , Now my weight is near normal and I never snored anymore. :)

What about the fact that having a deviated septum or sinusitis infection can also cause snoring. U also haven't mentioned the reason why people should avoid sleeping on their back or why does sleeping on your back causes snoring

I've been wondering why my roommate snores so loudly since she moved in. At first I was thinking it was because her breathing wasn't smooth, but that isn't the case since if she slept sideways. Thanks for the info!

My dad wears a steam breathing machine while he sleeps so his snoring doesn t get too bad. He used to snore VERY hard and loud and occasionally choke while sleeping. And he d wake himself up.

Snoring can be a deal breaker, because think about it, if you marry someone who turns out to be a snorer, YOU are the one who has to live with it for the rest of your life.
