In 2010, 30 billion dollars worth of fruits and vegetables were wasted by American retailers and shoppers, in part because of cosmetic problems and perceived spoilage. But what are these spots, anyway, and are they okay to eat? Elizabeth Brauer explains why you may not need to be afraid of picking up your grocery stores funky-looking fruit. That's interesting, the mushy spots are caused by bacteria? I thought
GMO's were supposed to alleviate that problem ) Anyone have any info on
this?
From what I know (and I don't know much, the 2 most common types of GMO's were designed to provide produce with bacterial defense in the form of toxins that specifically target bacteria. So, can anyone share a link to research or something that explains how these little microbial battles still occur? I am mostly asking because I took an environmental class 2 years ago that explained the danger of GMO's to humans, and I see some connections forming.
Here's what I know:
Direct studies are lacking, but indirect studies have shown there is a POTENTIAL danger from GMO's. The 2 most common types of genetic modifications done to produce involve bacterial resistance. I've mostly forgotten my studies, but here's a quick summary of what I know: one of these GM's directly gives produce the ability to create bacteria-killing toxins; the other GM allows the produce to withstand herbicides such as Round Up, and these herbicides also have bacterial toxins. Bacterial toxins- not a big problem for us Eukaryotic organisms, right? Wrong. Our bodies are actually made up of rather significant proportion of bacteria, especially in our digestive system where they play a vital role in nutrient absorption. These bacterial toxins DO have the ability to disrupt or symbiotic relationship with bacteria.
However, I always asked myself, If these bacteria are meant to kill bacteria, then why aren't there acute symptoms of bacterial deficiency in us, the consumers? I've taken a few guesses. Perhaps the strong digestive acids break down the toxins enough so they don't have a significant impact. Or maybe our bodily prokaryotes have evolved their own resistance to antigens and toxins, which is likely since they needed to have fought our own bodies immune system in order to have assimilated. If anyone has an answer, please share.
Regardless still, there HAS been direct studies that show the declination of human health and life expectancy - as well as the inclination of birth defects and contraction of certain diseases - in correlation to GMO consumption. These studies are a bit old, and I haven't done much recent research on them because of life. But yeah, that's what I know. This is what I would like a response to.
But since I am already ranting, I want to share more about this whole topic. politically. Here is what I also wondered, Why hasn't anything been done about this potential and significant threat to society?
Well, actually, there have been several attempts to stop the use of GMO's, herbicides, pesticides, and a few other things. But (you knew it was coming) America's corrupt legislation and greedy big-money business corporations literally swat away any revokes. One of the examples I am familiar with are the backlash of farmers. The people that actual grow these modified produce have tried to stand up to companies like Round Up, and as a result they get slapped in the face with threats of job loss and the like.
Sorry, I went political in the end there. But purposefully. As an America that would like to see some sort of improvement in this country, I think it is pretty important to share this. (This took me a half hour to write and edit, don't fail me internet)

Although spotty fruits have been proved to be safe to eat, people are not going to willing buy spotting fruit at a grocery store if there are other options at the same price. Therefore, I think that in order to avoid wasting food which can still be eaten safety, grocery stores should sell spotted fruit at a reduced price, just like foods close to the expiration date. This might save money for both the store, but also the production side of the transaction. If spotty fruit is already present in a person's home, I believe it is important that we work on our food waste and eat the food to the best of our ability. I know that spotty fruits are not going to make me sick. I cut off the part that is not as appetizing and I eat the rest. This saves me money and helps to reduce the amount of wasted food that other people, who are hungry, could have ate. Spotty fruits and vegetables are not an indication that they are inedible, they are simply a part of life and nature.

During video she says that the spots taste bad, then at the end she says the whole thing is safe and just as delicious, so which is it lady?
Guess they spent so much time doing research they forgot to proofread the script and catch this contradiction.

When I was small (in the 1960s) grandma use to go to the farmer's market and buy a BUNCH of spotty tomatoes, then spend days cutting out the bad spots and canning them. They were great, of course, and the cost was nill.
reply

Of course its all ok if you just compost any fruits or vegetables you don't eat
If you're growing a garden and just let your composted food return its contents to the soil, you can afford to be picky

my local grocery store sets out the rotten fruit or veggies for pig farmers to. pick it up so it's not a complete waste. my family would pick it up and feed it to our chickens. They loved it

Milk&Toast, does it mean that in order to eat mold bread, I just tear out the moldy part? Remember, when you see mold in bread, do not try to eat it or tear the mold part and eat it.

Americans are just over satisfied and they don't realise how much they're damaging the planet with their spoilt behaviours. You will die BECAUSE OF BURGERS NOT SPOTTY FRUITS. :)
reply

Only if the shop willing to sell them in cheaper price before they go really bad. It is totally not worth to buy a half price tomato that is half rotten.

Bacteria: charge the fungi!
Fungi: Traitor!
Bacteria: some of us are betraying us by BENEFITTING humans
