This video did an exceptionally bad job at explaining the solution. I found the correct answer on my own, but could not follow the video's description when confirming.
It mostly just listed the steps without offering the reasoning behind each decision. Would have been better to explain why each color needed 8 corners, 12 edges, and 6 faces and then go into the most effective way to overlap those combinations to not exceed 27 pieces. I anticipate a lot of people walked away from this one still confused with it not being their fault.

Here is a more advanced version: the same riddle but now with the added restriction that you cannot _rotate_ the smaller cubes while rearranging them. You can move them to different positions, but their orientation stays the same. So each of the 27 small cube has a bottom face that stays pointing down, a left face that stays pointing left, et cetera.
It's definitely possible, but you need a slightly more sophisticated approach.

Let x, y, z be different colors that can be any of RBG. Now, considering permutation of patterns of 3x, 2y, z we get 6 different combinations. Each combination is repeated 6 times. Thus, we get 18 sets. Now, again permutation of 3x, 3y will give us 3 combinations, and here each combination will remain single time only. Next consider, 2x, 2y, 2z which will have a single possibility and repeat it 6 times. Above is your answer. 8)

If the team is advanced enough to create a probe that can self propul and hover above the plant's surface to study it, and make coatings for protection against deep space, heat, and electric storms, why wouldn't they create a force field that can actually protect it from every damage mentioned above.

Just coat 3 layers: green first, then purple, then red: -)
The red coating will be burned up during reentry, and the green will insulate it even though purple is on the outside.

you answer. is wrong. you don't need any coating for the coldness of space because space is not cold. there is no atmosphere by which heat can radiate out of the probe.
