Starting in 80 CE, residents of Rome and visitors from across the Roman Empire would fill the stands of the Colosseum to see gladiators duel, animals fight and chariots race around the arena. And for the grand finale, water poured into the arena basin, submerging the stage for the greatest spectacle of all: staged naval battles. Janelle Peters details the history of these mock maritime encounters. Lesson by Janelle Peters, directed by Brett Underhill

There was no water. There are underground access points to the main field area which would not have been water tight as the floor was sand. There were sailors and ropes on site but they were most likely for setting up the massive shade cloth.

If you want to know how they flowed it I will tell you my teacher told us that they built an artificial lake near that was directed to the Flavian anfitheater
And they simply opened the pipe and water entered.

Fun fact: Romans believed in redistribution of wealth. The wealthy Romans actually enjoyed giving their wealth to the poor and it was a flex back in the day.

They didn't I saw a documentary about this and there was simply no way to stage that, there wasn't a way to pure so much water and drainit so quickly

I have a hard time believing that they kept 1, 000, 000 gallons of water in chambers. There wouldve been leaks everywhere in that day and age.
