Communication doesnt of course imply sentience or altruistic cooperative behaviour, which could be a dogmatic and ideological interpretation. A simpler explanation is that this is an illustration of deep adaptive responsiveness. Plant and fungal biochemistry and homeostasis needs to be versatile in ways that animal do not, because of their markedly different niches and to compensate for an inability to move like animals. This will manifest as various chemical communication pathways.
