I remember a grade school textbook with the tongue map. Though it had the disclaimer that all sensations could be perceived in the tongue, though the basic ones (4 at the time) were stronger in those four regions.
Maybe the idea that people thought you could only perceive taste in four distinct regions of the mouth is itself a misconception? I mean, anyone could put a sweet on the back of the mouth and see for himself that's not true.

I don't know how much it had to do with being in a different language as much as most people are just not good at comprehension. I've yet to ever hear or see a news organization accurately report any sort of scientific findings. It's almost always a an extreme oversimplification if not complete inaccurate interpretation, followed by unrelated anecdotal stories that they somehow try to correlate with the study or data.

On tastes, most of the other tastes I've seen introduced are just complex combinations of the basic tastes. And watery as a taste is bogus. Water has no taste. If you taste anything, it's the minerals and other junk present in the water. I doubt many people drink pure, uncontaminated H2O. Umami has always been weird to me since it's really just a salty/sour taste. It's acidic in nature.

The problem is everyone thinks their educated. Education as we know it is a misconception. We hold on the fact that one must pay for a degree of education to be worthy.
Learning can not be defined by books, or theories, if we truly valued education it would be free and available to everyone no matter their level of intelligence.
So, who wants 300. G's of debt by the age of 25?

People fall for mis-information because schools (and more importantly parents) have stopped teaching deductive reasoning and/or bottom up thinking. and they are too damn lazy to actually do any research on their own. How do I know this is true? Because, I'm not worried about you looking into whether or not I'm right.

My teacher said us on online class that, PI is equal to 22/7 exactly, so we can use 22/7 instead of fancy PI notation. Should I follow what he said? Because from my math knowledge, PI is actually not equal to any fractal right? I replied saying the same to my teacher but he refused to accept.

yeah 70% of statistics are made up is something I love to use when people are just spewing percentages without showing a link to where they got it. if you wont let me verify the credibility of your source then you might as well have made up the number yourself.

What is also very intriguing about the taste myth is you can disprove it your self pretty easily. Just put say a sour thing in a different place then where the map says the sour resepters are and if you taste something sour, the map is wrong.
