This is a fascinating story, obviously the theme is empathy, but it's subtle in its acknowledgement that although empathy is something almost anyone can develop, self awareness is a key part of it and is something that is difficult to teach directly.

I think the title is meant to be The Japanese folktale of the SELFLESS scholar - Iseult Gillespie rather than The Japanese folktale of the SELFISH scholar - Iseult Gillespie, it really confused me throughout the story!

I would like to know which old tale is based on. The man s clothe on the animation is different from the image which our Japanese have. His clothe like Buddhism is in Thailand, not in Japan.

In the Japanese caste system, those who worked with dead things were at the lowest level (ex. butcher, leather maker, undertaker) that is why this tale is so important.
