Get to know the story of the Mirabal sisters, who led a revolution against Rafael Trujillo s dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. For over 30 years, thousands of people were imprisoned, tortured, and murdered under Rafael Trujillo s dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. Three sisters would go on to lead an underground revolution. But while their courage inspired many, it threatened the man in power, and their lives would come to a tragic early end. Who were these brave women? Lisa Krause tells the story of Las Mariposas

0: 43 What? Elections can't be rigged! Did the highest court of the Dominican Republic investigate this ludicrous claim? Or did they do the sensible thing, and throw it out without examining the evidence? If this wasn't endorsed by the Dominican authorities, then we can be sure that these claims are simple, Domestic Terrorism. The Dictator is merely an elected official, and he has every right to garrison the white house. err, that is, his center of power, with troops, and silence anyone who makes false claims about elections.

I read about these sisters in a book called Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls (highly recommended. Their story highly fascinated me, and although I have no relation or much understanding Latin American culture, they were truly determined, brave women who I respect greatly.

One of the many, MANY countries plunged into a dictatorial dystopia backed by the United States. The poverty, corruption, and instability in Latin America persists to this day in large part due to the Americans mission to quash democratic governments abroad.

We teach using In the Time of the Butterflies in English 2 Honors at my school. This will be a great video to introduce the text next school year. The tone, music, and quick-but-comprehensible transitions are amazing!

Something as graceful and beautiful as a butterfly, may be put down with their efforts, but never fully gone truly.

I recommend reading a really good book In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. It details the lives of these amazing women and how they helped to overthrow Trujillo
