A new drug reduces the risk of heart attacks by 40%. Shark attacks are up by a factor of two. Drinking a liter of soda per day doubles your chance of developing cancer. These are all examples of a common way risk is presented in news articles, and can often be misleading. So how can we better evaluate risk? Gerd Gigerenzer explores the difference between relative and absolute risk. Lesson by Gerd Gigerenzer, directed by Visorama

My theory is that people aren't scared of the probability of it happening. But how deadly or traumatic would it be if it did. For example. more people are scared of the ocean because of sharks than they are scared of cars because of car crashes. Even though shark attacks are extremely rare and car crashed occur every single day. This might be because sharks are extremely deadly and can kill you very quickly, while if you're in a minor or moderate car crash. There is a higher chance of surviving.

This obviously doesnt mean that all cases of relative ratios are bad, for instance when talking about climate change, even though temperatures are increasing by about 3-5%, that is still a major and bad change, that should be addressed and not ignored

Why use faulty statistics for the video. If you want to use examples. Use actual examples. There were 0 divers attacked by sharks in Australia last year. So where is the 2 in a million from?

The thing is, the reason less people are getting killed by sharks than vending machines is because they are very aware of it. Prevention is just the key.
