What about lowering the height at the end of the valley by ending government subsidies for oil. Most of these zero carbon technologies are already profitable at the development phases they are in when the market price of oil is readjusted to reflect their true value without subsidies. Or even better the government moves those subsides from oil to a collection of these zero carbon technologies tipping the scales further in that direction. Once people see this shift from oil to carbon neutral technologies, I think the government could get public funding from them by setting up an index fund of solely zero carbon technologies (people would invest even more confidently if this index fund was funded by cryptocurrency backed securities, and they would see a general long term trend of increasing profit of their investment from these securities, giving a high market confidence to all of these technologies.
p. s. if the government is afraid of an economic crash by de-subsidizing oil they could make the transition gradual, subsidizing the zero carbon technologies before pulling out of oil investments.

Oh yes, the regulations are the problem. Not the fact that in the current system everything must be profitable, and good technologies are not being implemented simply because they won't bring that shiny dollars into the rich people's pockets. No, the problem is of course the government preventing those great private investors from puting their millions into the development of good technologies, by implementing their pesky safety demands that are not allowing the investors to multiply their money by a large enough ammount at the end.
This video is such a blatant capitalist propaganda.

I still really want to see a carbon market.
Companies that take out carbon from the enviroment can get vouchers for that carbon from the government. Then, companies that want to pollute need to purchase vouchers from these depolluters to offset what they output.
This will be a much more fluid way to reach 0 emissions. We can start by putting up a timeline of what ratio of carbon taken out needs to be purchased per carbon polluted. Start at a ratio companies can handle now, and scedule up to a 1: 1 ratio as fast as reasonable.

just wondering since i recently watched the seaspiracy film on netflix. Will TedEd talk about the fishing industry and their impact on the environment? you have multiple videos up about climate change from oil and plastic side for consumers. but i dont think you have one for why the fishing industry is hurting the planet way more. Main question behind this is, is Ted-ed too scared to actually talk about the issue or have you guys just not known about it?

Video:
It s vital for the government (i. e. taxpayers) to subsidize corporations so they can make money with little/no risk for at least as long as it takes main stream investors to part with their cash.
This video is required watching for every corporate lobbyist in around the world.

Great argument against freemarket fundamentalism and capitalism in general. Why do we even need the current freemarket system if they cant do the only thing they are supposed to do, allocate resources according to needs and benefit of all.

This is not stopping me from riding my gas powered dirt bike with my dirt biking family. The dirt bike jumped the valley of death on this one.
And we cannot entirely run off of solar power panels. It works but it s not a perfect solution.

Small Modular Nuclear Reactors could get us to net-zero in short order. We've had the technology for decades, we can whip them up and plug them in to replace every coal-fired and other power plants on earth in a matter of months.
