Tony Robinson explores the major uprising across large parts of England in 1381; it's origins, motives and aftermath Neil: Makes you wonder what would have happened if Wat Tyler hadn't gotten greedy. From this account it sounds like he was getting drunk on power and squandered everything the revolt had worked for and cost many lives in his belligerence. The rebels hadn't asked for anything ridiculous up to that point and had only a mediocre effect on the aristocracy. They just might have gotten their demands met if Tyler didn't suddenly think he was the new power. The fact he demanded a squire's head for simply calling him out is proof how power drunk he had become, and is a testament to his true nature. He'd become the monster his followers were fighting against, which is why no one sane moved. Whether it was instigated or innocence is moot, as he took the bait.
Who knows what Richard II would have become later without such provocation. He may have lit this slide as an inconvenience.

Superb, Thanyou Tony and crew. read Barbara Tuckman, if you havent alrealdy A Distant Mirror. Gives you a profound answer as to the legacy of that time. Very profound. Read this while on a Petroleum Geology Course in Maidenhead 1981, I truanted a bit, for Shell. My office at the time was next to the Savoy shown here and looked into the kitchens, yes Tony behind the facade its (was) pretty grotty. I grew up in London and lots we saw on this was my stomping ground, eg Tower Of London, London Eye, Strand etc. I have a friend who works as a barrister in those law courts. So cool. Great history. I now live in Sydney Oz. Auusies don't know it but this is what made them and their institutions. They dont realise how brutal and bloody their making was and take it for granted. To their peril, I think!

It would've been a lot better if the narrator explained in a short synopsis at the end just how of course, they lost. In regards to those demands about rights of serfs. Yes obviously the agreement not to punish the rebels wasn't followed. But what about the reforms to the new laws regarding serfdom? Those reforms obviously went on to happen at some point. But this conclusion doesn't acknowledge how this Rebellion ultimately played a part. Perhaps it's a long complicated series of reforms and events that brought about the ultimate achievement of those manifesto goals. But as a viewer of this program, I have no idea.
Also John Baker being executed on 4th July make one wonder if may be he was the great great great great great great great great great grandfather of George Washington?

The crux of the revolt was when the King Richard rode up to the revolters and said I will lead you. Yes they should have killed him then but we are using 21st century sensibilities with 14 century peasants The people really did believe at their core that the King was their King ordained by God and King Richard really believed that he was appointed by God. In todays cynical faithless world we cant comprehend their mentality. Note Im not saying that we are wrong to believe what we do today only that those in the past did not look behind the curtain to question certain beliefs and that the revolters never questioned Richards right to be their King.

Lessons from this documentary
1. Don't give up your weapons ever
2. I Royalty worshiping is a tool used against the people. Stop salivating over Kate Middleton, the queen of England, etc. these people will never see you as their equal and need to brainwash you to stay in power. History has shown that the only quality they have better than the rest of us is their a capacity for cruelty and treachery.
3. If you are a revolutionary commit to the cause and never back down.
4. Freedom has tio be fought for every day, No dropping your shield and going back to life as you sed to know it.

I have always found it. difficult to understand how the 11th of The 9th. 2001 is always seen as an act of war against a peaceful democracy. Lets face facts; over 40, 000 U. S. citizens are killed each year by shooting each other or themselves. This apparently is acceptable. The number of people Murfreesboro or killed by U. S. citizens overseas, is immeasurable. The U. S. A, doesnt have a name, as such, but has avoided this quite easily by simply assuming the name of the whole continent. A little confusing for any people who reside or hail from the other 22 countries in N. America.

The problem is obvious. We the People even in modern democracies consistently CHOOSE their preferred snakes, with only tiny minorities going for the gold (allegorically speaking meaning choosing candidates wisely, who are not there to rob the treasury for both themselves and their corrupt donors.
When the average person has higher standards for what society should be about (& not always be so ridiculously supportive read gullible! of wars and privilege and deception etc, then and only then will you have a sane society.

One thing I always wonder is how come neither side never thought to exploit the peasants in the Rival kingdoms? The French and the British were fighting each other off and on for centuries. I would have thought it would be a smart move if the French how to exploited English presents. They could have found ways to smuggle simple weapons in Scotland and Wales. Then those peasants could have easily caused massive chaos. That would have weakened the English forces fighting in France.

I find it offensive she compared 9/11 to the Peasants Revolt. 9/11 was carried out by a foreign enemy who did not ask for a parlay, and did not have popular support by the locals. I can see a fair similarities in todays Freedom Convoy than anything I can recall in recent history, minus the death toll. If the sheer horror and loss of life was the object of her compassion it was ineffective due to the more ideological differences!

The peasants revolt has started again! The Mandates meant to destroy us are the Target, the Enemy is the New World Order! It is the Truckers this time who are leading the way. The fire is lit! How far it will go remains to be seen. but if the NWO continues it's agenda much further, the end of humanity and a post-human era is not far off. The human struggle for freedom has reached perhaps its most precarious moment to date.

Fascinating and riveting historical account which resonates today now more than ever. These uprisings happen when that fine line where everyones threshold has been met. We all have a breaking point and know when to say enough is enough. Are we at this level yet? That all depends on who stands up for the cause and does whats right by the people. Only time will tell who that person shall be.

You missed one major point. people's revolts are civil and they expected civil treatment for opposing these elites. What should be learned from this is we need to be as brutal and ruthless as your forever enemy the elite. And when the king (elite) excepted the demands they should have gotten his signature and his head. Kind of reminds me of boy king Justin Castro.

Thank you for your response. Millions of Americans support Trump. Listen to his early speeches when he was running for President. Hes speaking to average Americans, hes lying about his intentions but hes speaking to their hearts. I wish I knew how to show his supporters that he despises them.

We owe these protesters so much. They deserve a memorial and so much respect. Richard II, none whatsoever. I'll have to look up how he died, but I hope it was badly.
Ok I looked it up and was not disappointed: he was deposed and starved to death in captivity. As you sow, so shall you reap.

lol Funny how probably like 95% of the London denizens (or tourists) that the camera focuses on have a dour look on their face.
If I saw a bunch of people dressed in period clothing trotting about with horses I'd be squealing with joy uncontrollably. :D

Missed an opportunity to mention how it may have paved the path for people like Oliver Cromwell, as well as protestants like Erasmus and Moore, of whose writing Utopia was in the minds of the founding fathers of the United States.

'The violence that they meted out in the Peasant's Revolt is unlike anything that there's been in London in my lifetime' - Drummer Lee Rigby would probably disagree with that, as would the victims of the almost daily stabbings, Tony.
reply

Its ignorant to compare something like this to 9/11. 9/11 was foreign attackers carrying out a planned out assault to ensite terror upon a nation. This was the poor class of a nation rising up against tyranny. Very different.
