Well at least the coastal forces of the Royal Navy dropped all nationalities ashore in Europe in all weathers, the foggier the better. Both my father and godfather Rip where MTB skippers.
My godfather was based at Ramsgate's 2nd MTB Flotilla which dropped french resistance operatives close to Royan in the sand dunes. They could have told you a good few stories of great daring do, in the triple Merlin engine Spitfires of the seas. No 6 flotilla at Felixtowe my fathers old outfit, dropped off mostly fluent German speaking Polish operatives, mainly around the Belgian and Dutch coasts before he was stationed at Malta in 1941.

My mother was 11 during the German occupation. She lived in Bordeaux with my grand-mere and my uncle who was 17 years older than her. She was seized by German Officer's and my gran-mere was given the choice of Concentration camps or go to Germany to make munitions. The choice was obvious. My Uncle Jean Peire joined the French Resistance. The German Officers did horrible things to my mother. She never forgot. My uncle then rescued her from the vineyards, and she was flown to the English countryside where they hid all the children. She married an American soldier and came to the USA when she was 17.

It's been quite a few years but, I recall being 18/19 years old and my draft card felt like a lead weight in my wallet. Fortunately my number wasn't called and I never recieved a greeting from my government and avoided Viet Nam. These heroic men were doing the most amazing things at the same age I was when my major decisions were, how big the waves were and if I ought to go introduce myself to that cute blond girl in the blue bikini.

My dad did one (just one) Lysander flight into France during the war delivering something or other. It was really a lark He was a Coastal Command Catalina/Sunderland pilot stationed at Bournemouth for a brief time and I guess he convinced a buddy to let him do the flight. I appears to have been legal though as it is clearly recorded in his Log Book.

I actually have a picture I took of a likeness of Hugh Verity's Westland Lysander ( V9367 - code letter B ) which I took at Duxford in 2018, the centenary anniversary of the RAF. The picture of the Lysander taking off, clearly shows the fixed ladder and the auxiliary fuel tank

Being young injects a person with a feeling of immortality. Coupled with patriotism, many of our greatest heroes have been very young. We see this generation after generation. Simply look at how many young men and women signed up to join the military, right after 9/11.

Its fortunate that this happened when it did; the men and women of that generation were extraordinarily brave and courageous and were willing to fight for freedom in their homeland. The young people of today just wouldnt do what their young ancestors did.

Still today it sickens my heart to see the picture of that (soviet) red flag in Berlin.
it is necessary that I should die for my people, but one day my spirit will rise from the grave in the world will know that I was right. A. H.

They were of course, all heros of liberty. I am moved by the story of this gentleman and his evacuation form Belgium. So much respect is owed to those men and women of the resistance without whom, we should not free men today. Bravo.

It would've been amazing to learn
That your kindly grandmother
Was a British secret agent
And was behind German lines
Gathering information and blowing things up
And to be so young
And risk there lives

Sir Lewis Hodges was a lovely man, grew the most beautiful roses and was always polite and friendly. You'd never have known just from speaking to him all that he had done during WWII and afterwards.
