So basically the Saxons under Harold defeated a Viking force in England just days prior to losing the country to the Normans under William the conqueror. There was already a Viking presence in Scotland and Ireland. England had already been under the Dane law. So, with the Norman invasion, England was once again lost to the Vikings who had adopted Christian customs. That is of couse, until the recent invasion of brown people from the south who could care less about other people's societal standards. England, a land up for grabs since Julius Caesar's little visit.

This documentary is terrible. It tells us little about the Vikings and descends into a lot of feminist tripe. Women's power is dictated by biology much more than culture or religion. I also sense an anti Christian vibe, even though the conversions are presented as voluntary, somehow it's made out that Christianity was some sort of aggressor, and a regressive religion at that. Typical of academia and media today who insist on looking at history and people's of the past through their own progressive lens.

The Vikings are underestimated in many ways, they were among other things bodyguards to the Emirs/Caliphs. And there special view of the world made them political savvy, when they had simple but egalitarian rules of law and settled larger disputes by Ting, where all adults had there say in the matter ( a democratic variant ) where the punishment/payment of lost value were settled after the guilt issue. They were also very open to other faiths/religions.

Whilst being open to other faiths was part of the success of the Norse it also proved their undoing, especially in regards to the rights - and rites - of Norse women. Most Norse women had equal rights under law, many learned to fight and were buried with their weapons. Viking women who were oracles or bards held more societal power than the male chieftains. Unfortunately, with Christianity the rights - and rites - of Norse women disappeared.

vikings got to north america, possibly even latin america, definitely into mediterreinian
the reason they settled in normandy is logistics and approvisation chains from their point of origin
to translate it into human language-
vikings were too much cowards to settle either in americas or in mediterreinian,
they wanted constant aprrovisation chains with home.

13: 49 clearly spoken from a non-Christian. Scandinavian vikings convert to Christianity to ease trade? The vikings had a superior military. Why is it the vikings that are converting to ease trade & not the other way round; Christians converting for practical gains? Clearly to these people, its not possible that these vikings were moved to accept christ.

This is simply awful to watch. Something that presents itself as a history documentary is woefully inaccurate with the costumes and settings. It looks like they borrowed costumes and props from the equally inaccurate Vikings series. Charles the Bald's bedroom looks like a dungeon. It perpetuates inaccurate views of history.

The Vikings conquered ancient pagan Rome. The Vikings fought many battles throughout Europe and against heavy Roman Catholic rule. The Vikings discovered North America around 200 years before Christopher Columbus where evidence of a Viking village known as Vinland was discovered from long ago.

Oh ffs, can't we just once have a documentary, series or movie about Vikings without them being clad in studded leather? Is there just this one equipment store that all the film crews get their shaggy furs and leather tunics from instead of the more authentic wool tunics and maille shirts?
reply

The viking longships and swords and armour were like no other. The vikings were large and strong to lift swords that were four feet long and thick and wide. Their helmets commonly covered the nose and cheekbones. They were the best ship navigators and excellent spies. They wore crosses.
reply

The vikings political skills were about religion and women?
These lazy so-called historians do not have one single original thought among them. They are trapped in theories of the past.
Sorry, but Timeline is doing a disservice to history with these superficial videos.

How nice to see the Vikings shown as they really were, raiders and warriors yes, but also explorers, traders, settlers, people who changed the face of Europe, and travelled further than anyone else before them or after then until the 'Age of Discovery' centuries later.
reply

This is a lovely change from the stereotypical depiction of seafaring raiders burning and killing as they went. The skill of the Norse as diplomats and traders was immense and it's refreshing to see this in a documentary.
reply

What is the irony?
Charlamagne went to Viking lands to massacre the Saxons. The Vikings gave sanctuary to the Saxon refugees and went out to Francia and attacked Paris.
The Franks made the Vikings International.

reply

As a historian from Norway I can forgive the the use of inaccurate costumes in fantasy shows - such as Vikings. But to use the same inaccurate costumes in a documentary is wrong teaching and completely unforgivable.
reply

This documentary has a ridiculously narrow view of Christianity and conversion. the Vikings all converted for the money, and Christianity's only victory was to suppress and oppress liberated women. Unbelievable.
reply

As a descendence of vikings, I feel discusted about the way my ancestors are portrayed. They were, if anything, vain. You would NEVER see a viking dirty if he or she had an oportunity to bathe.
reply

why such a huge focus on women. Ugh. Two feminist females and a beta male. I hate these new docs can we never have normal documentaries again? What is this adamant focus on women. sick of it
