The true story of the suicidal mission of British forces to overrun the Imperial Russian fortifications with a courageous but foolhardy mass charge dareekie: This documentary perpetuates the myth that Florence Nightingale was a heroine who saved the wounded soldiers in Scutari. The truth is the opposite. Her hospital had and continued to have a far higher mortality rate than others due to her stubborn adherence to the miasma theory of infection rather than the micro organism theory. Fresh air and open windows did not stop the wounded dying of infection. The other hospitals had far lower death rates.

Wars are a part of evolution
It's what we learn from history which helps with the future
During wars there's always a rapid jump forward in medical issues
The rapid evolution of arms
If you add all the lives lost through wars throughout history wed now be extinct

From an auction show on the BBC, which I forget the name of at this moment, came a silver military tea pot From the Heavy Cavalry. dated from the Cimean war.
Apparently the heavy Bigade did much better than the light brigade, and won the day.
It fetched a very good price at action.

Mary Jane Seacole was also a nursing manager with the British, and thought by many to be better then Nightingale. On the other hand she was also black, so she doesn't really count.
One other point. the sheer volume of BS in the Comments is truly breathtaking.

the chasseurs d'Afrique are made up solely of Frenchmen, no colonial auxiliaries.
the commitment is made on the basis of former riders having at least ten years of service in the light cavalry.
A fearsome team.

Odd there is no mention of the conflict between Lords Raglan and Cardigan? They were in-laws and detested each other. I was always under the impression part of the miscommunication was due to their mistrust of each other?
reply

No one mentions the Heavy Brigades involvement in the charge or that Mary Seacole was more important to the soldiers than Florence Nightingale. After all Mary was at the front. Flo was miles behind the line and a cleaner

What really stands out to me is the utter insanity of war. I'm not to sure what the allies were trying to achieve. After all they were the invaders. 90 years later it was the nazis and then putin the war criminal.

Nothing surprising here, open your hearts and hear, Zulu victory against the British invaders, Afghan annihilation of British colonialist forces, Japanese overpowering British forces in Malaya.

Very good documentary, I didnt realise some of the Aristocratic military leaders were so incompetent and disorganised. They had any leadership skills and no idea of how to conduct a war.

One intresting fact is that Sweden almost joined this war to take back finland but it didn't happen due to the Minister of Finance telling it out be to costly to declare war.

School kids in the UK are being taught that a black woman called Mary Secole actually tended the sick when in fact she ran an officers and was nowhere near the wounded
reply

This was a time when honor before death was everything. We have these same heroes today, too bad most don't understand how much guts it takes to do such things.
reply

I notice there is no mention of that heroine of the revisionist left Mary Seacole. Its almost as if she was really a profiteer who ran an officers club.

How dare you call us arrogant the first war correspondent is a bunch of British BS learn the history of the first modern war before claiming that
reply

it's not often you hear anglo saxons admit the french were much smarter militarily. though you can leave it to the english to criticize themselves

That Dan Snow advert annoys me. You can pull up at the side of the road and walk into Stonehenge, its not 'exclusive access' as he says.
