Viking Raids What It Was Like to Be On the Front Lines

Ten-foot spears, three-foot shields, and a thousand raving warriors - Viking combat was brutal, bloody, and often deadly. Whether raiding a defenseless monastery to haul off gold and jewels or lining up to battle a rival army, Vikings took no prisoners on the battlefield. The life of a Viking warrior started in childhood when boys would train and hunt to learn the spear. But the warrior's life wasn't only for boys; shield-maidens fought alongside the men during Viking battles, throwing spears and fending off enemies. Sometimes Vikings also made love connections on the battlefield. Reyshiel: I do not agree with the concept of Viking Warrior Maidens who supposedly went into battle along side the Men. Women did not have the endurance or the required physical brute strength to do battle. They were too vital to lose in combat, they had far more important tasks to preform such as child raising, making clothing and preparing food to be eaten. Without them, there would be no Viking raids, for they handled everything while the Men were out hunting, building ships and going into battle. This Viking Warrior maiden thing is absolute nonsense, War is better off left to the business of Men.

Um so where to start with the inaccuracies in this video. 1 the Vikings had a highly organized and well structured form of government. The Berserker didn't eat psychedelics that is almost completely made up to the point of fiction. And also their where BARELY ANY WOMEN ON RAIDS if any at all. Their is no evidence of female warrior remains at battle sites the only way we know of women going into battle is in combat in NORWAY AND DENMARK NOT ENGLAND and it was written down 100 years after the fact by Christian monks. We have only one or two viking women found buried in the manor of a Yarl and we have no record or account of their lives.

Hadn't Charlemagne forcibly converted 4, 500 Friesians to Christianity 10 or 11 years before the raid on Lindisfarne? and killed them all immediately afterwards? + He'd apparently banned any trading between Christians and Pagans. not to mention the trouble with Theodosius in 391 making it illegal to be pagan and punishable by death. Surely these things which your very interesting program didn't mention hugely influenced the way the Norsemen viewed Christians and their monasteries?

Berserkers did not go into berserkergangr, IT was the process of going berserk. The elite berserkers who gaurded the cheif, were called the Ulfhedenar. And, while the spear was one of the weaponized tools of a rookie viking, they were known more for their love of axes, whicj was another tool pressed into fighting. And, the grave discovered in Birka in the late 19th century, was originally thought to be that of a man, and only corrected in the mid 20th.

The Northman was the most accurate day to day life in the life of a berserker, a warrior and a normal day to day life for peoples in the Rus kingdoms and Scandinavian.
Also when you said women thats kinda false bruv. Women were RARELY on the battlefield shield maidens werent running around like they are portrayed in modern Hollywood. Like almost every society it was men that filled the boats and held the sword.

They were nothing but cowards! Attacking indefensless women and children, raping any pillaging towns without men to defend them! But when there were men an warriors in town they stood a side and skip town for more easy prey. They were cowards! Once they met the Arabs and Genghis Kahn, their reign ended with a bang.

The scandinavian pirates (vikings) were just a bunch of milksop cowards and bullies when they fought. Backstabbing murderers. That sounds like people.
They were good craftsmen and storytellers and sailors. They should have stuck to eating shrooms and playing guitar by the campfire. Come hear uncle Svens band.

I dont know if Im proud if my ancestors were Vikings or just normal medieval Norwegian people. Because my ethnicity is Norwegian as far as I know. Who knows if my ancestors were murderous Vikings, or just sacrificed peasants that had to be offered to the Norse gods

It wasn't all about gold in the monasteries, the monks were often noblemen's sons who would pay for them, they were also educated, so literate, docile, rich sons make really good slaves for a number of reasons, they are valuable. Vikings were not dumb or random

Apparently Robert Eggers (the guy who made The Lighthouse, which is in my top 10 favorite films) is working on a film called The Northman which is about vikings. Given his passion for historical authenticity, I have a feeling this is going to be a good movie.

Everytime I do mushrooms I focus and meditate on being fearless like a berserker viking. It's been working amazing for my ptsd. Anybody with severe anxiety issues I highly reccomend doing psilocybin therapy and focus on the viking inside of you.

Wrong on berserkers
These are your psychopathic personalities, they did wear armor or seen with animal hid armour. Sword or battle axe, and a shield all depending. Add in lot's of shrooms, a night of pumping themselves up for battle.

I am a natural redhead. I must have a Viking ancestor. My sister fully believes that ancestor was a beserker. This is why my brother and I have such incredible tempers. There are 4 of us 2 redheads and 2 very dark brunettes.

It seems like war was quite sophisticated during the Ancient Greek and Roman empires and then quickly went to just barbaric uncoordinated attacks when the Roman Empire began to fall apart.

This guy's got a GREAT narrator's voice! I love the video he did on the life of Christopher Lee, a. k. a. Hammer's house of horror's DRACULA, and how much of a REAL LIFE BADA$$ he was!

I wonder if the horns on the helmets might of been from animals heads on the helmets or simply worn on the heads. A pelt of a wolfs head (no skull bone obviously) would look like horns.

The Berserkers definitely used more than a light shield. not gonna read the comment thread, but I hope that you've been properly shamed over that for the last 3 years.
