I think they went 50 miles more which is where they intended to originally land at in the beginning. There was a charismatic young Navigator who insisted they stop and recolonize Roanoke and even though John White was technically the captain everyone looked up to this young man for his sailing skills. It's simply bad luck that Croatoan is on the tree and the post of course some of them could have been wiped out by the Croatoan or intermingled. So Proto land itself they try to sell sell it fails when they should have said more they would have found them and the people that were sailing the ships refused to go anywhere else except straight East to England. If I had the money John White did I would spend the rest of my life trying to find out what happened to my daughter and granddaughter

I think this mystery is way overblown. The colonists didnt have enough supplies and their resupply ship was delayed. They were starving so they packed up and left for the island Croatoan. The colony was disassembled and moved with only items too heavy to move left behind. They carved where they were going on a tree as they had agreed to do before the guy who was to get more supplies left for England. Because of war and what not, there wasnt any real search for them for years. By that time, they had either died of starvation, disease, exposure, or been killed by hostile tribes, or they been absorbed into another tribe and moved on. Their fate is a mystery, but not the big, spooky mystery its been made out to be.

probably went to seek food as that is the reason he left for supplies. moving away from the ocean was a good reason because there were hurricans back then. considering the weather, Indians and food shoetages. it is possible that many were killed in a hurrican. some killed by Indians as they tried to move inland and (some assimulated into the tribe. as stated there were mixed white and indeans) and then some probably starved and died from the elements along with the wild life. eating poinious berries forenstance. snake bits, bears and the like.

A very easy case. If they had left of their own free will they would have left notes giving dates and locations and a full description of what was going on. Carving the name of the neighbouring tribe shows they had little time also the abbreviated CRO carved into a tree shows the person carving it did not have time to finish it.
Abducted by the neighbouring native tribe obviously. If White had the sense to abduct a similar number of important people from that tribe they could have exchanged those to get their colonists back. Simple

I have a theory that the cro in the tree was a failed attempt and the croatoan were a clue that the crow, meaning native americans or the crow tribe were towing to be sold. The native americans may know what english words sounded like, but may not have been able to read. There were people with english features found with native americans. Sirs daughter was missing and this probably sparked the native americans future fate. Same with the witches in salem.

My 7th grade NC history book explained this great(mystery. Some of the colonists and Croatian Indians tried to go north to jamestown. the Tuscarora Indians led by Powhatan massacred that crowd and some were sold to other tribes. This included Eleanor Dare and the Sammosettes. The rest integrated with Indian tribes near Lumberton NC
not alot of people in a large hostile area. Only British people would be mystified.

Given what happened to Jamestown, and North Carolina being an even more inhospitable place, I can easily believe a combination of disease, hostile natives and the survivors either being conquered by or going with native tribes for survival is highly probable. The Spanish wiping out the colony is very unlikely. The Spanish were ruthless yes but they kept documentation so this would have been written about somewhere.

I did subsctibe to the theory they simply abdorbed inyo the native tribe, but one would have to think that, in just 3 years, there would still be obvious European whites still around who remained as they were. I think a rival tribe attacked the colony, who then tried to escape to the friendly Croatoan tribe and their village, but were annihilated.

When White FINALLY returned with supplies (which were desperately needed when he left)--3 years later, he saw the clue CROATOAN, and knew it was a nearby island, but didn't bother to go looking for the settlers. which included his wife and daughter.
The man needs to go down in history books as history's biggest jerk.

For 300 years, Barbary pirates kidnapped over 5 million white people who were living along coastal towns and villages in England, Ireland, and Europe and all along the infamous Barbary Coast.
They all vanished after being sold in North African slave markets.
Case closed.

If they didn't go to Croatoan then why was there some of them had to have gone and simply intermingle intermarried with the Indians that might be why when the pilgrims and stuff landed near their they found Indians that were white-skinned and blue-eyed

New Theory: Having long ago depleted their tobacco, the people discovered a new and wonderful tobacco plant. After a rather indulgent smoke, the people suddenly had a craving for White Castle and thus began their expedition and wild adventures.

Itd make the most sense to me if they just so happened to get wiped off the map by a hurricane with an intense storm surge. Considering the time they lived, I doubt any of their structures would survive even a 5ft storm surge.

It's simple. The settlers were a threat. They were killed. The evidence was cleaned up very thoroughly. The natives were smart. They didn't want to leave any trace of anything happening at all.

One of my theories of this disappearance would of not been a disappearance but maybe after 1 or 2 years the colonists left starved and some committed suicide or cannibalism would take life

Can anyone corroborate the Croatoan connections to other disappearances and deaths? I can only find one source that makes the same claims and they dont cite their sources.

I theorize that the colonies were scattered to mainland America, and there's no way they could carry out cannibalism and massacres because every colony has weapons.

NC Native here. The Lost Colony is, like, mandatory to know about here. We talked about it probably every year that I was in school. Love our state legends.

Pretty sure they left to find food and supplies. They had already traveled that far, so I can see them traveling farther to save themselves.
