Who would you say has been the most influential guitarist up until today? One who has continued to inspire countless guitarists and musicians alike, up to this very day? One who stunned the music world and has changed the way the guitar is played and looked at? If a guitarist, any guitarist weather they are a well know, top rated guitarist, are not well know but are in a popular, well know band or group(regardless of genra) or are in a garage or club band was asked the question who is/ are the guitarist('s) that has inspired you the most? What one guitar player do you think would consistently be named as the player who has had the most influence on them or has been one of their influences? As a young child I played Piano and then at 15 years old I started playing guitar. Over 43 years ago and still noodle'n around to this day. Damn I'm getti'n old. Lol. My ability woudn't indicate that I've been playing that long but I'm happy with what I can play. I'm a fan of pretty much all music but I'm especially partial to any music that features great guitar playing. Any player from Django Reinhardt to Les Paul to Roy Clark and Jerry Reed, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Allan Holdsworth, Robert Fripp, Paul Gilbert, Dime Bag Darryl, Steve Lukather, Frank Zappa, etc. My taste runs the gammut. I've listened to countless interviews of the greatest and most popular and influential guitarists of our time and over the past 40+ years. In these interviews the question is always asked, who was your influence? While there are guitarists that have been mentioned many times as a major influence during these interviews there is one name that is mentioned much more than any other. One who has been the reason that many of the top rated guitarist's of today as well as countless guitar players who have a dream of becoming one of the greats one day, start playing guitar. One that has inspired many of the well known, great guitarists who were already on the top of their game, want to play even better. Any true lover of music especially a lover of the instrumental part of the music would know or could guess who that one player would be. I've read a lot of the comments here and I'm a bit dissapointed and bewildered that this name has not been mentioned really at all in the lists of 'great or greatest guitar player(s. Personally, for me I can't say that any one guitar player is the greatest of all time. I love listening to any guitar player that is inventive, has style, is tasteful and proficient has a nice tone, has fun and adds little runs, fills, etc. There are so many players like that and that I love but I do have a favorite. Like I said earlier any one who is into music especially the instrumental side could guess who my favorite is. Anyway, just wanted to put it out there. There is no such thing as A greatest guitar player. The greatest guitar player is who ever YOU think it is. It's a personal choice. I don't consider the Allmans to even be Southern Rock, more R&B based. Lynyrd Skynyrd is the prototype and King of the hill for that genre. Along with Molly Hatchet, .38 Special, the Outlaws, and several other bands. But without Duane and his considerable skill with that aspirin bottle slide there certainly wouldn't be many slide players today. Probably no Tedeschi -Trucks Band either.

No, Duane Allman wasnt the best guitarist ever. I dont think that person exists but Id say that technical skills are typically more advanced amongst jazz guitarist and classical guitarist.
In the popular music genre, there are many great guitarist but Im usually more impressed with their creativity than technical abilities. Jimmy Page is a great example. He is a great guitarist but he writing ability is much better than his playing ability.

I don't think anyone can Say, who was the Best guitarist in history, or the world, etc. Because, that umbrella is too broad. Does that included rock guitar? Only American guitar? What about classical guitar or Spanish guitar.
But, my three personal favorite rock guitar players are: Duane Allman, Carlos Santana, and Jimi Hendrix.

It's really a dam shame a GOD DAM SHAME that Duane didn't get to flourish as a musician and died. He would've been if not the one of the top 3 guitarist ever. 2 bike accidents takes 2 band members is just some baaaad MOJO man. So young so tragic. Rip brother. Sky dog was an awesome book if anyone is looking 4 an amazing read.

I live across the street from where Duane crashed his bike and just around the corner from where Berry crashed his. And a few years ago, I lived across from the cemetery where Duane and Berry (and now Gregg) are buried, where my next door neighbor was Otis Redding III. The music history here in Macon is INSANE.

Sadly, the 50th anniversary of his tragic death is this Friday - October, 29, 2021. Duane Allman was the greatest slide guitarist ever! He was also a virtuoso playing traditionally. His advanced version of the Carter Scratch method will always be revered. R. I. P. Maestro Duane Allman

Please. Why do humans actually have to argue the best, in everything? How could anyone actually compare DA to someone like Elmore James? Perhaps DA could be recognized for his innovativeness, but not greatest of all time. Among a huge group of superbly talented guitar players, yes.

Duane was - and if he reached you with his music - he maybe the greatest for you and thats perfect.
The one touched my heart and ears was the late Terry Kath also a genius musician.

I have always HATED the puerile greatest guitarist argument. There will never be another CHET, or MERLE TRAVIS, JANGO, JERRY REED, GEN CAMPBELL, etc etc etc, All were unique as are ALL HUMAN BEINGS. Eric Clapton is the greatest Eric Clapton in musical history.

Maybe they wasnt the same after Duane Allman Died but one man dont make a band Dicky Betts was a great guitar player to, Seven turns was a great album which was released in 91 but if Duane had of lived he would have been one of the greatest players of all time

Duane playing on Wilson Picketts Hey Jude and Derick and the Dominoes Laylasays it all to me. Just about every piece of music he touched is a hundred times better. Cant even imagine what Dickie and Duane would come up with.

I never understood why guys take chances like owning and riding a motorcycle. Riders have no protection. I know of several people who were NOT stars that died in motorcycle crashes.
